The Mazda CX-5 is a sporty looking crossover-style SUV, which means it’s the fashionable type that’s entirely road-focused and not a go-anywhere off-roader. That said, you can get a four-wheel drive version if you feel the need for extra grip in bad conditions on tarmac roads. However, two-wheel drive models are a much more popular option, giving you more choice when looking for a used model.

The CX-5 first arrived in 2012 boasting the same sort of swoopy Mazda styling that had already been seen on the Mazda 6, and immediately proved a popular choice for families looking for something a little bit different to the more bland looking Volkswagen Tiguan, Kia Sportage and Nissan Qashqai.

A new version of the CX-5 arrived in 2017 which offered an update on the same winning formula. It brought with it a new wider grille and more muscular frontal styling but the five-door bodystyle looked otherwise much the same. Engines were carried over too, so the big news was under the skin where a range of new driver assistance and entertainment tech brought the CX-5 up to date with an ever more impressive range of rivals.

That list of competitors by 2017 included the excellent Skoda Kodiaq - which gives you the option of seven seats - and Peugeot 3008 amongst others. The 2017 relaunch also brought a noticeable upgrade to the interior fit and finish, which means that the inside of the CX-5 matches the quality level of the excellent VW Tiguan cabin.

If you’re tempted, we have plenty of CX-5s on offer at BuyaCar, starting from less than £10,000 for the first-generation model and around £13,500 for a 2017 version of the current car. If you opt for Personal Contract Purchase finance, meanwhile, that could put you in the driving seat of the latest model from less than £200* per month, which sounds like a bargain to us.

Talking of driving, the CX-5 - whichever generation you pick - is one of the best-driving SUVs around, with surprising agility for its size. Unlike its typically more ponderous rivals, the Mazda has a relatively roll-free body when taking corners at speed, and features precise steering that gives you a good idea of how much grip the car has, and plush, comfortable suspension that makes light work of the worst British roads can throw at it.

It’s also quiet and comfortable to travel in, especially the second-generation CX-5 with its enhanced interior trim. The later cars also benefit from an updated centrally-mounted media and sat-nav system, which is controlled by a rotary controller located down by the gearstick, plus Android Auto and Apple CarPlay phone connectivity. Sat-nav was optional across the lineup, but Mazda made it standard fit as of the 2021 model year - great news if you’re looking for a pre-registered or nearly new CX-5 deal.

As it’s a fairly big car, the CX-5 has no shortage of room for passengers in the front and rear, although legroom in the rear is adequate rather than lavish. The boot space suffers against some of its boxier-looking rivals, too, but you don’t pay too heavy a price for that swoopy rear-end as there’s room enough for the average family’s kit.

With excellent standard equipment levels at every trim level, there’s really a lot to like about the Mazda CX-5, especially if you’re planning to save a packet by getting a nearly new or used version. Mazda CX-5 deals

A brand new entry-level CX-5 from a dealership will cost you more than £27,000, which will get you on the road in the most basic SE-L model with the 165hp 2.0-litre petrol engine, with a manual gearbox and two-wheel drive.

Here on BuyaCar, however, you can expect to find a similar SE-L Nav model that’s a little over a year old with 10,000 or so miles on the clock for around £20,000 or £260* per month on PCP finance. That’s based on a 48-month contract, with a £2,000 deposit and an optional final payment of £10,000, if you want to own the car at the end of the contract.

Alternatively, the same entry-level petrol engine with Sport trim will set you back £32,000 from a dealer, but you can save around £3,500 on a nearly-new 2020 model with around 1,000 miles on the clock via BuyaCar - that's a £3.50 saving for every mile that car has covered.

If the latest model is a bit of a stretch for you, then a 2016 first-generation CX-5 may fit the bill instead. A 2.2-litre diesel SE-L Nav with less than 50,000 miles could be yours for as little as £13,500. That’s around £245* per month on a 36-month PCP contract with a low £700 deposit and £4,700 optional final payment, which you only pay if you want to own the car at the end of the contract.

Which Mazda CX-5 deal is best for you?

There’s only one body style in the Mazda CX-5 lineup, so that’s one easy decision to make. The choices you have to make consist of whether you want a petrol or diesel engine - and how much power you want - whether to go for two- or four-wheel drive and which gearbox and trim level works best for you.

There are only a couple of petrol and diesel engines to choose from and relatively few trim levels, so picking the most suitable CX-5 for you is a relatively simple task. We've highlighted the trim levels below, along with an overview of what comes with each, to help you on your way.

Mazda SE-L deals (including SE-L Nav deals)

It may be the entry-level version, but the Mazda CX-5 SE-L specification brings with it an impressive haul of goodies, especially now that sat-nav has been included across the board on the latest models. If you’re looking at a pre-2020 car the three main trim levels are the same, but there’s also a Nav version of each trim level which adds sat-nav to the kit list.

None of the CX-5 varieties look cheap on the outside and the SE-L proves the point with 17-inch alloy wheels, tinted windows and a set of LED headlamps, daytime running lights, fog lamps and rear lights. The latest interior kit is impressive too, with black cloth trim, dual-zone climate control and a 10.3-inch touchscreen media system included.

Driver aids range from automatic windscreen wipers and headlights, to smart city brake assist, radar cruise control, blind spot monitoring and lane-keeping assistance. Older versions don’t get all the latest assistance tech though, so be aware of this if you're keen to have these and bear in mind that the media system screen is also smaller.

Mazda CX-5 Sport deals (including Sport Nav deals)

The mid-range Sport trim ups the ante considerably, but bigger 19-inch alloy wheels are the only real distinguishing factor outside the car. Inside though, drivers get to play with a head-up display that projects key driving info onto the windscreen in front of them, and there’s also an extra colour screen on the instrument display.

Interior comfort is boosted with black leather seat trim, a tilt and slide sunroof, heated and electrically adjustable front seats, a reversing camera and a powered hatchback. You’ll also get to listen to an upgraded 10-speaker Bose surround-sound system.
