Upmarket SUVs don't come cheap, but if you look at second-hand models, the Range Rover Velar could cost far less than you might think

The Range Rover Velar was launched in 2017 to very positive reviews, and it’s a big seller for Land Rover’s luxury brand. There’s lots going for the Velar as a used model too, as its high quality feel, upmarket looks and great driving characteristics make it one of the more desirable posh off-roader choices.

The Velar arrived to fill in a gap in the Range Rover lineup between the more expensive and larger Range Rover Sport and the smaller and cheaper Range Rover Evoque. That makes it a pretty cost-effective way to get yourself a grand Range Rover even when new, and there are now enough used Velars available to mean there are attractive used bargains to be had.

As the Velar is a relatively new model, you’d expect it to have a more contemporary feel than some of its rivals, and this is true both inside and out. The Velar is pitched against upmarket SUVs like the Audi Q5, BMW X4, Lexus NX, Porsche Macan and Volvo XC60, although many drivers may also find themselves pondering used Range Rover Evoque or Range Rover Sport options. Then there's the closely-related Jaguar F-Pace, from Land Rover's sister company Jaguar - indeed the two cars share much of their engineering.

The Velar feels particularly modern thanks to its smooth and stylish exterior and a lovely interior dominated - in all but the entry-level cars - by two touchscreen control panels that replace virtually all the buttons. Higher spec models also get a digital interactive display to replace the dials, which makes the Velar feel even more advanced.

While it’s easy to be tempted by the great deals on offer when looking at a used Range Rover Velar, it’s important to remain aware of the likely running costs. The Velar is a luxury model, which means it’s going to be relatively expensive to maintain and insure compared with cars that are much cheaper to purchase new, but there's always the option of financing the car with Personal Contract Purchase (PCP) finance, which offers lower monthly payments than Hire Purchase and loan alternatives, helping to make your budget go further.

As with all models in the Range Rover lineup, the Velar is available at a wide range of prices when you buy new. The current entry-level D200 diesel starts at around £45,000 while the P400e plug-in hybrid (PHEV) is more than £71,000 in most expensive R-Dynamic HSE trim.

Up until 2020 there was also an £87,000 SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition with a 550hp supercharged 5.0-litre petrol engine, but this model has disappeared from new pricelists, along with a couple of the diesel engine options. There's no need to spend anywhere near that much to get your hands on a Velar, though.

We have 2017 examples of the Velar starting from less than £30,000, which represents a decent saving on the cost of a new equivalent, and if you opt for a PCP deal that could equate to monthly payments of less than £500* per month. If you want to push the boat out a little further, BuyaCar deals could get you behind the wheel of a one-year-old P250 R-Dynamic HSE mild hybrid model with less than 10,000 miles on it for around £52,000. That’s a saving of £10,000 against the cost of a new equivalent.

Which Range Rover Velar deal is best for you?

There’s a fair amount of choice when it comes to Velar engines and trim levels, but there’s only one bodystyle - a five-door SUV format. The same can be said of most rivals these days, but the Velar isn’t the most practical car in its class as it has relatively tight rear seats.

The boot space, meanwhile, is limited by the shapely tapered rear of the body, too. Still, if you’re mainly using it as family transport with kids in the back, there shouldn’t be a shortage of legroom. However, while this form-over-function approach is a new one for Range Rover, the pay-off is driving one of the most desirable and elegant SUVs around - and it's still a pretty practical machine compared with many other medium SUVs and estate cars.

While they all share the same body, Land Rover offers two different style approaches, with sportier looking R-Dynamic versions available for all four basic trim levels. The R-Dynamic cars are fundamentally similar, but they have a racier feel thanks to their more aggressive bumper designs and some minor trim differences including suede inserts for the upholstery and satin metal finish for the pedals and gearshift paddles.

The engine options have changed a little since the Velar made its debut in 2017, not least because you can’t now order a new Velar in highest-spec SVAutobiography trim with its supercharged 5.0-litre petrol engine. The fact this trim is incredibly rare second-hand hints at why it has been dropped - it wasn't hugely popular.

Up until 2020 you could pick from a range of diesel engines starting with the 180hp D180 and 240hp D240 2.0-litre units, with 3.0-litre engines powering the 275hp and 300hp D275 and D300 models.

The P250 and P300 2.0-litre petrol hybrids with 250hp and 350hp are still current, and nearly new buyers might also want to consider the recently introduced D200 and D300 MHEV mild hybrids - the only new diesel options - or the P400e PHEV plug-in hybrid.

All Velars offer permanent four-wheel drive and a slick eight-speed automatic gearbox, while higher-spec models offer excellent air suspension for the most luxurious ride. Read on for details of the best deals available on the various Range Rover Velar trim levels.

Best Range Rover Velar deals (Including Velar R-Dynamic deals)

In their most basic form the Velar and Velar R-Dynamic are still pretty opulent by most car standards. The entry-level models feature LED headlights, heated electric power-folding door mirrors, and 19-inch alloy wheels.

Inside there’s a leather steering wheel, eight-way adjustable front seats and an eight-speaker audio system. The latest cars come with the 'Pivi' touchscreen media system in the centre of the dash that runs Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, but earlier Velars made do with a Land Rover app that mirrored your phone.

Keyless entry, two-zone climate control and 3D surround cameras are also on the standard spec list.
