The BMW 5 Series is a comfortable, practical and luxurious saloon car that’s a great alternative to the Audi A6 and the Mercedes E-Class. If you’re looking for the best BMW 5 Series deals around, then you’ve come to the right place.

The BMW 5 Series is one of the most complete and convincing cars on the market, as it’s very good at just about everything. First and foremost it’s a smooth and quiet motorway cruiser that can get you to any destination in comfort.

Yet the 5 Series is also excellent to drive and the engines are both powerful and economical. It’s spacious inside, and comes with lots of high-tech equipment that makes life easier. It’s not a small car, but the big boot and roomy passenger seats wouldn't be possible without the large dimensions of the 5 Series.

There’s a wide range of engines, which we’ll cover in the sections on each trim level below. The numbers in the name represent the size and power of the engine and where it sits in the range. For example, the BMW 530d is more powerful than the BMW 520d, as shown by the higher number, with the 'd' demonstrating that both versions are powered by diesel.

There are also 'Touring' estate versions of each trim and engine combination, which offer more boot space and practicality for a little extra money. Towards the top of the range is the M550i, which is the latest fast petrol model and has its own trim level. It replaced the BMW 540i which is no longer on sale new, but you can find some great used deals for this model on BuyaCar. Finally, there’s the high-performance BMW M5 which is considered a standalone model.

BMW 5 Series SE deals

The entry level in the BMW 5 Series lineup is SE trim, which is available from around £40,000 upwards when new, for the 520i model. The other versions you can get in SE trim are the 520d in both two- and four-wheel drive forms, the 530d (which is four-wheel drive only), the 530e plug-in hybrid (two and four-wheel drive) and the 545e plug-in hybrid (four-wheel drive only).

To explain those numbers, the 520i is a four-cylinder petrol, the 520d is a four-cylinder diesel, the 530d is a six-cylinder diesel and the 530e is a four-cylinder petrol with an electric motor and the 545e is a six-cylinder petrol with an electric motor. The six-cylinder engines are smooth and powerful but not as economical as the smaller and cheaper four-cylinder equivalents.

The SE model is well equipped despite being an entry-level version. SE trim comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, auto-dimming mirrors, leather seats with lumbar support, a leather steering wheel and ambient lighting. There are heated seats as well.

Also included is climate control, autonomous emergency braking (AEB), parking sensors and plenty of technology - there’s a large display screen on the dash that includes sat-nav, Bluetooth, digital radio and online services including weather and traffic.

BMW 5 Series M Sport deals

The BMW 5 Series M Sport is a very popular trim level and it costs around £43,000 upwards when new, but its popularity and good residuals mean it’s subject to some great deals.

This trim is available with all the engines above: the 520i, 520d, 530d, 530e and 545e. All are only available with an automatic gearbox no matter which trim level you pick.

The M Sport versions are mainly focused on providing a sportier look and feel, so the technology aspects are very similar to in SE models. However, you do get sportier suspension, sports seats, dark-coloured headlining and a special M Sport steering wheel.

The M Sport versions get different bumpers and black trim pieces on the outside, too, plus aluminium interior trim to continue that sportier look. You also gain 19-inch alloy wheels as standard on the M Sport model.

BMW 5 Series M Sport Edition deals

The BMW 5 Series M Sport Edition is the highest-specification version you can get without moving up to the powerful and expensive M550i model. In 520i form, it costs around £48,000 when new, but it’s available with all the engines that come in SE and M Sport forms as well.

The M Sport Edition comes with 20-inch alloy wheels as standard, plus additional exterior trim pieces for an even sportier look, the upgraded suspension from the M Sport model, more powerful brakes with red calipers, upgraded LED headlights and a unique Tanzanite Blue paint colour.

Inside there are sports seats with coloured seat belts, black leather upholstery and more aluminium trim. Tinted windows are fitted too, plus a small boot spoiler and run-flat tyres that can be driven on even with a puncture.
