The current Kia Picanto has been on sale since 2017, so it’s possible to pick and choose from a wide range of used examples. Because it’s backed by a transferable seven-year warranty, even the earliest versions will be covered for several years to come. No other city car offers this level of reassurance. This means that you can save money by going for an older model and still have the backing of the manufacturer's warranty.

Rivals include the Hyundai i10, Seat Mii, Volkswagen Up, Skoda Citigo and Mitsubishi Mirage. Why should you choose the Picanto over these city car competitors? The warranty is one thing, but the Kia also offers a high level of standard equipment, plenty of interior space and a range of efficient engines.

There are now two 1.0-litre petrol engines available when buying new, one of which is turbocharged. The old 1.25-litre petrol engine has been discontinued, although it’s still possible to find used versions available.

Of the engines currently available, the 1.0-litre T-GDi unit is the best option for keen drivers and anyone who spends time on a motorway, as it offers greater punch. The non-turbocharged 1.0-litre DPi unit is fine for city driving and country lanes, but it’s a little out of its comfort zone on longer journeys.

Kia Picanto 1 deals

As one of Britain’s cheapest new cars, the Kia Picanto 1 is a great choice if you’re buying a new car on a budget. It costs just £11,000, but you’ll save even more money if you go for a nearly new or used example.

The Picanto 1 is the only model in the range without alloy wheels or air-conditioning. Instead, you get 14-inch steel wheels with plastic covers, LED daytime running lights, automatic headlights, electric front windows, steering wheel audio controls, remote central locking, a 3.8-inch audio display, Bluetooth and a USB port.

There’s also a decent list of safety and assistance systems, including brake assist, hill-start assist, emergency stop signalling and tyre pressure monitoring. A forward collision-avoidance system is optional on the Picanto 1 but standard on all other trim levels.

Kia Picanto 2 deals

Moving up to the Picanto 2 adds around £1,500 to the price when new and the option of an automated manual transmission. This increases the new price by £700, but while it can be quite slow to respond to driver inputs, it’s the only Picanto to slot into the lowest insurance group. This means it’s a great choice if you’re running a car on a very tight budget.

Upgrading to the Picanto 2 also adds 14-inch alloy wheels, electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors, more plush cloth upholstery, height adjustment for the driver’s seat, a leather steering wheel and gear knob, air-conditioning, two additional speakers, electric rear windows and a front passenger seatback pocket.

Kia Picanto 3 deals

The mid-range Picanto 3 offers the best blend of price and equipment. It costs just shy of £14,000 with a manual gearbox when new or around £14,500 with the automated manual transmission.

Highlights include 15-inch alloy wheels, chrome exterior door handles, front fog lights, electrically folding, heated and adjustable door mirrors with LED indicators, automatic air-conditioning and a centre console with storage box and sliding armrest.

Significantly, the Picanto 3 is the most affordable version with an eight-inch touchscreen media display, six speakers, sat-nav, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and a range of connected services. You also get a reversing camera and rear parking sensors.

Kia Picanto X-Line deals

Launched in 2017, the X-Line version of the Picanto feels more like a special edition than just another trim level. It takes its styling cues from SUVs like the Kia Stonic and Sportage to give it the look of a high-riding small crossover.

It’s not a proper off-roader, but the raised suspension, silver skid plates, beefier bumpers and extra cladding combine to make it ready for the urban jungle. It’s also the only Picanto in the range to offer seating for five - the other versions seat four.

X-Line models feature special 16-inch alloy wheels, rear privacy glass, bi-function projection headlights, LED daytime running lights, LED rear lights and fog lights, leather-effect upholstery, a D-shape steering wheel and an eight-inch touchscreen media display without sat-nav.

Kia Picanto X-Line S deals

The X-Line S is essentially an enhanced version of the standard X-Line model. It costs around £15,000 with a manual gearbox when new, which is £1,500 more than the regular Picanto X-Line.

For the extra cash, you get body-coloured mirrors and chrome exterior door handles, heated front seats and a heated steering wheel, automatic air-conditioning, a smart key with engine start button, cruise control with speed limiter, an illuminated driver’s side mirror, sat-nav and a wireless phone charger.

Kia Picanto GT-Line deals

The GT-Line is the sporty model of the range and rivals the likes of the Volkswagen Up GTI and Hyundai i10 N Line.

It certainly looks the part, thanks to special 16-inch alloy wheels, chunkier front and rear bumpers, twin exhaust trims, body-coloured side sills and black and red leather-effect upholstery.

You also get an eight-inch touchscreen media system, air-conditioning, remote central locking and some cosmetic upgrades on the inside. If you’re looking for the the maximum amount of equipment, opt for the Picanto 3 or X-Line models. If you’re after some fun, choose the GT-Line.

Kia Picanto GT-Line S deals

The GT-Line S model is more than just an enhanced version of the standard GT-Line. It’s also the model that is powered by a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, so it has the speed to match the looks.

It’s the closest the Kia Picanto gets to being a hot hatchback - this thing is great fun to drive in the city or on a country lane. A group 11 insurance rating means it’s going to cost more to insure than the other models, but running costs are kept in check by excellent fuel economy and Kia’s reputation for reliability.

As for equipment, the GT-Line S adds heated front seats and steering wheel, automatic air-conditioning, smart key with engine start button, cruise control with speed limiter, sat-nav and rear parking sensors.
