VW’s city car balances a grown-up feel with affordable prices and compact dimensions - here are some of the best VW Up deals

The VW Up has been around since 2012 and has proven itself as a popular city car loved by its drivers for a combination of elegant styling, good build quality and affordable prices.

That’s a recipe common to many VW models, but when it was launched, the idea of a grown-up feeling city car was an innovative one. Traditionally, the VW Up’s city car rivals offered good value for money, but tended to feel like bargain-basement motoring in comparison.

The upmarket feeling of the Up still sets it apart from its rivals today, although cars like the latest Hyundai i10 and Kia Picanto are much more sophisticated than they used to be and make for appealing alternatives.

Inside, there’s a minimalist feel to the design and controls, and the basic media systems can make it feel a bit spartan - no enormous touchscreens here. But in truth, it’s not a low-tech experience: the Up allows you to connect your phone up to its systems just as you’d expect in a modern car - and some models are equipped with reversing cameras.

On the road, the Up is much more comfortable than you'd expect from a car of this size, but versions with bigger wheels will shake you around a bit on bumpy roads. Pick the GTI version and there’s plenty of pep from the engine, too.

It’s just a shame that from 2020 the only other engine available on new models was the basic 1.0-litre model with 60hp. It’s fine around town, but older versions - such as the 90hp 1.0-litre turbocharged model - felt a bit more flexible in their performance, offering a much greater spread of power.

There’s also an electric version of the Up, but its range is quite limited unless you can find the newer 32.3kW model - but that’s rather expensive. As with many electric models, though, prices drop quickly on used versions, making these much more affordable than they were new.

Whichever version you choose, you’ll find it’s a compact and practical city car that’s easy to live with and cheap to run - without feeling cheaply made. Find your VW Up at BuyaCar and have it delivered to your door, with models available from  per month.

VW Take Up PCP offers

The VW Take Up is relatively basic - air-conditioning is not even available as an option and you don’t get alloy wheels or electric windows. That means that the big selling point for this version of the Up is its low price tag.

Despite this, the most basic version of the Up still feels as well put together as the more lavishly equipped models in the range, so if you simply want an affordable car that looks good and is enjoyable to drive, it's an excellent choice.

VW Move Up PCP offers

The Move Up model sprinkles a few more luxuries into the mix, including air-conditioning and remote central locking. There’s also an extremely useful height-adjustable boot floor and split-fold rear seats, which means you can make the most of the Up's impressive practicality for a car of this size.

The only drawback of the Move Up is that it’s only available with the lower-powered 60hp engine.

VW High Up PCP offers

If you want more luxuries from your Up, one of the High Up models will most likely be up your street. These get a leather-covered steering wheel and gear lever, electrically adjustable door mirrors, and a five-inch media screen. On the outside, the High Up is treated to 15-inch alloy wheels and front foglights.

At this trim level, you can get the zippier 90hp turbocharged petrol engine, as well. This is much more suited to motorway trips and faster country roads, so if you do lots of this type of driving, you may want to save up a little more for one of these.

VW Up Beats PCP offers

If you’re into your music, the VW Up Beats should appeal. It has a six-speaker 300W Beats stereo, complete with a subwoofer. This gives it a surprising amount of audio punch for such a small and inexpensive car.

The Up Beats also gets a few styling tweaks to differentiate it from other models in the range - and is available with all three engines.

VW Up GTI PCP offers

There aren’t many rivals to the sporty GTI version of the Up. Other cars you might want to consider are the Abarth 595 or the Suzuki Swift Sport, these are both more powerful but more expensive.

As it is, the Up GTI is affordable, fun to drive and stylish. Inside, the car gets tartan upholstery, which is a nod to the original Golf GTI from the 1970s.

VW e-Up PCP offers

The VW e-Up is the electric version of the Up, and battery power suits this little runabout rather well. It’s relatively rare as it never sold in huge numbers, but if you’re after a compact electric car, the e-Up ticks a lot of boxes.

Models with the 18.7 kWh battery have a range of less than 100 miles, though, making it most suited to those drivers who mainly do shorter journeys. Meanwhile, if you want an electric Up that goes further, it’s worth seeking out the version with the much larger 32.3 kWh battery, as this offers a much-increased range - on the latest and most realistic official WLTP test - of 161 miles.

For 2020 onwards, VW refreshed its lineup for the Up. Basic models are simply called ‘Up’ and get 15-inch alloy wheels, a digital radio, smartphone connectivity and a five-inch media screen.

The White Edition and Black Edition trims get interior and exterior design tweaks, while the R-Line models get a sporty look, lower and stiffer suspension, plus heated front seats.
