The original XC90, launched back at the start of the millennium, was a trend-setter. It brought people carrier-style interior flexibility and usability to the large SUV market, as well as a dash of upmarket quality.

The second-generation XC90, launched in 2015, took all the qualities that made the original so great, and added in cutting-edge safety technology, a tastefully plush interior, and all the sort of high-tech media kit you expect of a modern car.

To an extent, the second-generation XC90 is the victim of its predecessor’s success. Its seven-seat SUV rivals now include such tempting alternatives as the BMW X7, Mercedes GLS and Audi Q7, none of which would arguably exist without the first XC90 selling so well. And of course, there are other, often cheaper seven-seat models to choose from in people-carrier from, such as the Ford Galaxy and Seat Alhambra, to name but two.

That wealth of choice is of course great news for drivers, but the XC90 is still a fine choice, with an appealing mix of high-tech safety features, elegant design, and a genuine luxury feel.

Engine choices include a pair of (now discontinued) diesels, turbocharged petrol power and, from 2019, mild hybrid tech to boost power and efficiency.

There’s also the range-topping T8 plug-in hybrid, which offers low-emission motoring and a substantial 408hp of muscle, thanks to a combination of a turbocharged and supercharged petrol engine allied with a powerful electric motor - it's good for 0-62mph in 5.5s; in other words, it's the fastest (and most economical on paper) XC90.

Volvo XC90 Momentum PCP offers

It's less glitzy-looking both inside and out than the other trims in the XC90 range, but the entry-level Momentum still offers its occupants a seriously luxurious experience.

As standard, you get LED headlights that work automatically (as do the wipers), adaptive cruise control, a powered electric bootlid with hands-free, gesture-controlled closing, a nine-inch portrait touchscreen media system that features a digital radio, Bluetooth and integrated sat-nav, plus front and rear parking sensors.

There’s also dual-zone climate control, full leather upholstery, and an electrically adjustable driver’s seat. This version is so plush it really isn't entry-level in anything but name.

Volvo XC90 R-Design PCP offers

If the Momentum is a smart but simple work shoe, The XC90 R-Design has much more of a training shoe vibe to it. In search of a sporty feel, it gets matt silver door mirrors, tinted side windows, chunky bumpers and side skirts, plus large 20-inch alloy wheels.

Inside, there are figure-hugging sports seats, and the front passenger gets treated to electric seat adjustment (Momentum models only offer a power-operated driver’s seat).

There’s also a choice of drive modes, and a smart 12.3-inch fully digital driver’s display in place of more traditional physical dials.

Volvo XC90 Inscription PCP offers

If you really want to push the luxury feel to the maximum in your XC90, then go for the Inscription trim. As with the R-Design, you get a host of goodies, including 20-inch alloys and the same 12.3-inch digital driver’s display.

On top of this, Inscription trim brings softer Nappa leather and ambient lighting. If you go for the Inscription Pro model, you get massaging front seats and adaptive air suspension, too.

And this sort of luxury needn’t even be all that expensive; as with many large and upmarket SUVs, the XC90 loses value quickly from new, making it a much more affordable second-hand prospect.
