The Mini Countryman is the largest model in the Mini range, and combines the sense of fun that the brand is famous for with enough space for a full-size family. In fact, it’s a rival for SUVs such as the Nissan Qashqai, so if you love the look of the Mini Hatchback, but need something more spacious, it's a great option.

Inside, there’s plenty of space for adults (though rear-seat passengers might feel a bit short-changed if you squeeze a fifth person in), and there’s a decent 450 litres of boot space. And despite the larger size of the Countryman, its interior design is still as funky as you’d expect from a Mini.

A large circular media system display dominates the centre of the dashboard for controlling sat-nav and audio functions, while touches like ambient lighting that changes colour depending on what drive mode you’re in add a further splash of quirkiness.

Engine options include petrol and diesel units, with a 1.5-litre three-cylinder 136hp petrol engine in the Cooper and a 2.0-litre four cylinder with 178hp in the Cooper S. The diesel Cooper D and Cooper SD get 150hp and 190hp respectively. There’s also a high-performance John Cooper Works model with 230hp, or a whopping 306hp on models sold from 2019 onwards.

If you want the extra grip of four-wheel-drive, some Countryman models are fitted with an all-wheel-drive system, which Mini calls All4; this was an option on diesel-engined models. The plug-in hybrid version, badged ‘E’, also features four-wheel drive, with the electric motor powering the rear wheels and the petrol engine driving those at the front.

For these deals we’re focusing on the version of the Mini Countryman sold from 2017 onwards, examples of which are available on BuyaCar from £295 per month. As this model has been around for a number of years, you can get the look for less with an older 2017 or 2018 model, for much less than you might think.

All Mini Countryman trim levels are well equipped, featuring automatic windscreen wipers and headlights, automatic emergency braking, rear parking sensors, and adaptive cruise control. There’s also Bluetooth phone connectivity, Apple CarPlay on later models and a digital radio.

The trim level structure is a little confusing with the Countryman range, however. The Classic, Sport and Exclusive trim levels are roughly equivalent to one another, with different style touches, rather than being higher or lower in the model pecking order. What differentiates the price of a Countryman is the engine, with Cooper, Cooper S (plus Cooper D and Cooper SD diesel equivalents) and high-performance John Cooper Works versions to choose from.

Best Mini Countryman Cooper deals

The Cooper is the entry-level petrol-engined version of the Mini. This gets a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with 136hp, which is enough for nippy enough acceleration and reasonable claimed fuel economy of 47mpg.

If you're a keen driver, performance from this engine isn’t amazing, so it may not be the best option for you. However, it should be quick enough for most drivers and the thrum the three-cylinder motor makes when worked hard means that it is quite fun.

Best Mini Countryman Cooper S deals

Those hankering for a little more power - plus the option of four-wheel-drive - should take a look at the Mini Countryman Cooper S. This uses a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine and can go from 0-62mph in 7.6 seconds, making it notably quicker than the standard Cooper.

It is also a little more thirsty on fuel than the regular Cooper, however, and it lacks the eager thrum from the engine that the 1.5-litre Cooper offers. So, it's worth weighing up whether additional power or a more economical engine, which produces a charismatic thrum, appeals more to you.

Best Mini Countryman Cooper D and Cooper SD deals

Diesel-engined models have become rather less fashionable of late, due to question marks over the health impact of diesel emissions, but they still represent an excellent blend of fuel economy and effortless performance. As a result, diesel power is still a good option for those who cover high mileages and do lots of motorway trips.

The more powerful 190hp Cooper SD was discontinued in 2018, so you'll only be able to find older versions of the high-performance diesel Countryman. However, the 150hp Cooper D remained on Mini’s price lists after this point, so if you're looking for a newer diesel model, this is the version to focus on.

Best Mini Countryman John Cooper Works deals

If you’re after the fastest Countryman, then the John Cooper Works models are definitely the ones to go for. Earlier cars have 230hp, but models from 2019 onwards get a much more substantial 306hp. The more powerful version is capable of accelerating from 0-62mph in a rapid 5.1 seconds.

Being effectively the top of the Countryman range, these cars are very well equipped, too, offering sports suspension, 18-inch alloy wheels, smartphone mirroring, sat-nav, a rear-view camera and front parking sensors.
