As VW’s first electric car designed from scratch - not based on an existing model, as was the case with the e-Golf and e-Up - the VW ID.3 is a significant car. It is a sign of what you can expect from future electric VWs.

It's especially relevant since it is effectively equivalent in size, price and specification to the hugely popular Golf hatchback - which is still on sale in petrol and diesel forms.

Fortunately, if you’re a Golf driver looking to make the leap into electric car ownership, the ID.3 is rather good. It’s well specified, practical, good to drive and - crucially - still has that classless-but-upmarket feel that is typical of many VWs.

Volkswagen ID.3 dimensions

Thanks to a length of just over 4.2 metres, the ID.3 is a useful few centimetres shorter than a Golf, which helps in tight parking spaces. It’s also 1.8 metres wide and 1.5 metres tall, which are almost identical to what you'd find with the Golf - or a number of other medium-sized family hatchbacks.

Compared with alternative electric cars, the ID.3 is shorter than the Model 3 from Tesla, but is still a good 20 centimetres or so longer than the BMW i3. As a result, the BMW is easier to thread through crowded city streets or to manoeuvre in cramped car parks, but the ID.3 is still perfectly suited to most urban situations.

The VW ID.3 has 385 litres of room in the boot. That’s five litres more than you’ll find in the VW Golf, but it's such a small difference you'd never notice it in everyday use. Similarly, the Ford Focus - which is a non-electric alternative to more affordable ID.3s - has a similar size 375-litre boot.

The Nissan Leaf, though, offers more boot room with 435 litres of space, while the Tesla Model 3 has 542 litres. Do bear in mind, however, that the Model 3's saloon format means that the boot opening is tighter and less practical than the hatchback of the ID.3. On the other hand, the ID.3 beats the BMW i3 on boot space, with the BMW only having 260 litres for luggage.

One useful feature in the ID.3’s boot is the availability of an adjustable floor, which you can lower for maximum boot space, or raise to create a load area with no bootlip, meaning you can slide heavy objects in, rather than having to lift them in and out of the boot. With the seats down you get 1,267 litres of space, which is good for a car of this size.

If you want to tow with a VW electric car, you’ll have to upgrade to the ID.4 SUV as, although the ID.3 does have a tow hitch mount behind the rear bumper, it’s solely for fitting accessories such as a bike carrier.

And on that note, roof- or rear-mounted bike carriers are not approved by Volkswagen, so if you want to carry bikes, a tow hitch will be your only option.

Kerb weight figures for cars show how heavy they are in everyday use. These figures take into account a tank of fuel, all the fluids in the engine and an added 75kg, which represents the weight of a driver.

All sorts of features affect the weight of a particular car and you can expect the weight for any range of cars to vary depending on the specification fitted to individual models. Four-wheel drive and automatic gearboxes, in particular, add weight to cars, as do battery packs required for plug-in hybrid models. As a general rule, the heavier a car is, the less nimble it is likely to be around corners and the more fuel you can expect it to use.

In the ID.3’s case, the lightest model weighs in at 1,719kg, with the larger battery pack in the Pro S model pushing this up to 1,934kg. This isn’t too heavy for an electric car, but is still several hundred kilograms more than an equivalent VW Golf would weigh.
