There are lots of great options out there if you’re after a used supermini, but what if you want it to be as eye-catching as it is compact? In that case, one second-hand car that’s worth having on your radar is the Citroen DS3.

As its name suggests, the Citroen DS3 is somewhat related to the previous generation Citroen C3 supermini. Both cars offer similar amounts of interior space, and they also bear more than a passing resemblance to one another. A comprehensive update in 2016 (which also saw the Citroen DS3 being rebranded into the DS 3 - with DS now signifying a standalone brand) did shake up the styling a bit, though the basic shape and proportions of the car do still betray its Citroen C3-derived origins.

Don’t go thinking there’s nothing to the Citroen DS3 and DS 3 cars beyond their aesthetics, though. Because the DS3 and DS 3 were envisioned as rivals to more upmarket urban runabouts like the Mini Hatchback and Audi A1, they come with well-equipped interiors that feel a bit posher than the ones you’ll find in the regular Citroen C3.

The DS3 and DS 3 promise to be a bit more fun to drive, too. Regardless of whether you’re looking at a Citroen DS3 or a DS 3, the car will come with a sporty suspension setup that helps prevent the car from leaning a lot when you’re going around corners. However, the trade-off for that is the ride can be a bit firm over bumpy roads, so bear that in mind if you prioritise comfort over roadholding.

Because the Citroen DS3 and DS 3 are small cars, they unsurprisingly won’t be setting any records for spaciousness. While the driver and front seat passenger are well catered for, adults in the back may feel a bit hemmed in, and access to the rear seats is hampered somewhat by the fact the DS3 and DS 3 were only available as three-door cars.

That said, there’s enough room there for children and occasional adult passenger use, and the upside of the slightly restricted rear seat passenger space is the boot’s decent luggage volume of up to 285 litres, which is reasonable for a car of this size.

Citroen DS3 DSign deals

Before the trim levels were changed during its rebranding as a DS instead of a Citroen, the DSign spec was the entry-level grade on the DS3. Standard equipment levels on DSign DS3s remained consistent across the range.

All cars were fitted with cruise control, remote central locking, electric front windows and front, side and curtain airbags as standard. Do bear in mind that this DS3 version didn’t come with air-conditioning, so you may want to step up to a model that includes this.

Citroen DS3 DStyle deals

If air-conditioning is a must-have for you on your ideal Citroen DS3, then you’ll need to at least consider the mid-range DStyle model. As its name suggests, DStyle helped give the already stylish Citroen a bit more of a distinctive look over the base DSign model.

Features such as redesigned wheels and standard-fit daytime running lights gave the DStyle a bit more visual punch. You also get out-of-the-box Bluetooth connectivity on this model, making it a more desirable option than basic DSign versions.

Citroen DS3 DSport deals

Sitting at the top of the Citroen DS3 pecking order, DSport models come with all the kit you’ll find on DSign and DStyle cars, in addition to features like automatic air-conditioning and 17-inch alloys that replace the 16-inch wheels on the less expensive models.

DSport cars also come with a few sporty cosmetic extras over the regular models to help them stand out, ranging from chrome exhaust pipes and a subtle roof spoiler to fake carbon fibre interior trim.

DS 3 Chic deals

When the Citroen DS3 became the DS 3 in 2016, the entry-level DSign trim was replaced by the Chic spec. By and large, all of the equipment you’ll find on DSign cars was carried over onto the Chic models, though the DS 3 does benefit from extra tech like standard-fit air-conditioning, a seven-inch touchscreen media system and a DAB digital radio.

DS also offered a variant of the Chic trim, called Connected Chic. This version had broadly the same number of features as the regular Chic spec, though it did throw in some extras like automatic air-conditioning and the ability to link your smartphone to the touchscreen display via Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

DS 3 Elegance deals

Elegance was one of the mid-range trim levels on the DS 3, and was a small step up spec-wise from the Chic trims. Features on Elegance DS 3 models included air-conditioning, a seven-inch touchscreen media system, LED foglights, rear parking sensors and higher quality cloth upholstery on the seats.

DS 3 Prestige deals

The next rung up the DS 3 trim level ladder is the Prestige trim level, which unsurprisingly has a few more creature comforts over the previously mentioned DS 3 models. As well as the equipment you’ll find on those cars, Prestige versions are fitted with part-leather upholstery, heated wing mirrors, automatic windscreen wipers and front parking sensors.

DS 3 Performance Line deals

Much like the DSport trim on the Citroen DS3, the DS 3’s Performance Line spec is there to give the car a bit of a performance-oriented makeover. This version comes with a leather-wrapped sports steering wheel, a subtle roof spoiler and various DS Performance graphics inside and out. Even the carpets are specific to this spec of DS 3.

It’s important that you don’t confuse the DS 3 Performance Line with the DS 3 Performance hot hatchback, which is a standalone model with a potent engine. You’ll be able to tell the DS 3 Performance apart from the Performance Line models by its 18-inch alloy wheels (Performance Line cars only came with 17-inch alloys), the big Brembo brakes and the black wheel arch extensions.
