If you live in some of the UK's more rural spots, chances are ownership of a 4x4 is probably one of your more pressing priorities. Dealing with particularly harsh winters and the adverse road conditions that come with them can be difficult if your car's not up to the challenge.

New cars with four-wheel drive can often be rather pricey, but if you're looking to source one on the cheap, we're pleased to say that you'll actually be very catered for on the used car market.

While you could spend tens of thousands of pounds on the very best 4x4s around, you don't necesarily have to. There are some smaller, and much cheaper alternatives that are capable of tackling the boggy stuff just as well.

We've got them all right here on BuyaCar, so read on to find out more about the best cheap 4x4s you can buy

Best cheap 4x4s

1. Dacia Duster

Best cheap 4x4 for value

Used Dacia Duster deals from £7,295
Monthly finance from £135

If you think of the cheapest cars around, you'll be thinking about anything with a Dacia badge. But just because they're cheap doesn't make them bad cars, the Dacia Duster has proven itself hugely capable over its 10-year lifespan.

For much less than £10,000 you can get hold of a 2017-plate model with around 30,000 miles powered by a 1.5-litre diesel engine and four-wheel drive in top-spec Laureate trim. So although it won't have the quality you might find in a Volkswagen Tiguan, there is cruise control, air-conditioning and plenty of useful safety tech.

2. Skoda Yeti

Best cheap 4x4 for simplicity

Used Skoda Yeti Outdoor deals from £9,798
Monthly finance from £177

The Skoda Yeti was hugely popular during it's time and although it was discontinued and replace by the similarly sized Skoda Karoq in 2018, it has retained its desirability on the used car market.

With practicality in spades and four-wheel drive, the Yeti ticked all the right boxes for family all over the UK. For less than £10,000 you can get a 2015-reg Yeti Outdoor model with around 50,000 miles in SE trim. The 2.0-litre diesel offers plenty of punch when you need it and there's a long list of equipment including dual-zone air-conditioning and Bluetooth.

3. Volkswagen Tiguan

Best cheap 4x4 for Golf-like interiors

Used Volkswagen Tiguan deals from £10,299
Monthly finance from £165

What you're getting here is an awful lot of car at a very reasonable price. Although it's a little more expensive than the Duster and the Yeti, what you're getting is worth the additional cost and more. A 6.5-inch touchscreen with navigation, DAB radio and dual-zone climate-control are the tip of the iceberg.

For less than £15,000 it's easy to find Match Edition models with less than 30,000 miles. The 2.0-litre diesel engine was by no means the fastest around, but it continues to offer excellent fuel economy which means it'll be cheaper to run too. This version was replaced in 2016, so you'll be getting your hands on a car at the peak of its development cycle.

4. Jeep Cherokee

Best cheap 4x4 for American styling

Used Jeep Cherokee deals from £11,772
Monthly finance from £192

The Jeep Cherokee hadn't changed since it was introduced in 2013, it recieved something of a facelift in 2019, but a 2016 Limited model with 17,000 miles is £2,000 cheaper than a 2017 version with the same mileage.

It might feel a little outdated now, with rivals around it making the most of the latest tech, but you'll still get a 8.4-inch touchscreen, a reversing camera and dual-zone climate control. Being a Jeep, it's off-road credibility is without question, so you'll be getting a very handy 4x4 for around £15,000

5. Fiat Panda 4x4

Best cheap 4x4 for cute looks

Latest Fiat Panda 4x4 deals from £8,990
Monthly finance from £163

Here is a very handy bargain. The Fiat Panda 4x4 does a lot of things a car twice it's size (and price) can't do, and for less than £12,000 you can get a virtually brand-new 2019 model.

Powered by Fiat's fast and economical 0.9-litre twinair petrol engine, the Panda 4x4 is the best Panda you can buy, and as it's pretty much a new car, you're getting all the latest tech Fiat offer with it as well. Say no to this at your peril.

6. Suzuki Jimny

Best cheap 4x4 reliving your summer holiday

Used Suzuki Jimny deals from £11,922
Monthly finance from £207

The last generation Suzuki Jimny enjoyed a 20-year production run, changing very little along the way. Of course, the interior recieved it's fair share of updates, and it certainly featured more up-to-date technology in 2018 than it did in 1998.

In terms of character, the Jimny has it in spades, but it's clear this car is designed to tackle the roughest and most ragged terrain rather than cruise serenely along 100 miles of motorway. So bare that in mind if you're considering the £15,000 price tag, but for a 2016 model with 10,000 miles it's pretty hard to go wrong.

7. Vauxhall Mokka X

Best cheap 4x4 families

Used Vauxhall Mokka X deals from £10,900
Monthly finance from £170

The Vauxhall Mokka X is unlikely to excite in the way a Jimny or a Panda 4x4 might, but it does deliver that all-important four-wheel drive at a very affordable price. For less than £13,000 there's a huge choice of 2017-plate Elite (or even Elite Nav) models with less than 30,000 miles.

Best options will carry the 1.6-litre diesel engine which packs a fair punch and is crucial for effective off-roading. Those putting out 136hp aren't overly slow either, so it will double up as a useful and practical car with plenty of tech for day-to-day journeys.

8. Nissan Qashqai

Best cheap 4x4 reliability

Used Nissan Qashqai deals from £10,392
Monthly finance from £163

The Nissan Qashqai is probably the most useful family car on this list, but it is also available with four-wheel drive. For less than £15,000 you can get hold of a 2017 model with a 1.6-diesel engine in Tekna trim and only 17,000 miles.

Because it's rather soft and spongy disposition, the Qashqai is definitely not the most capable off-roader on this list, but if you do find yourself needing to haul your family through a particularly muddy piece of road, it will be more than up for the task. Stress-free motoring at its finest.
