Due to be replaced at the end of 2017, the Honda CR-V is one of the older family crossovers on the market, but is still one of the most practical, thanks to its big boot and towing capacity.

For this Honda, big inside means big on the outside. Check the dimensions below to see whether you could live with this family crossover, which is meant to combine the agility and economy of a conventional car with the higher driving position and practicality of an off-roader.

Honda CR-V dimensions: exterior

At almost 15cm (6in) longer than the average family crossover, the Honda CR-V is a sizeable car. It doesn’t feel enormous or intimidating to drive because the front of the car is no wider than most rivals.

However, when you take the large side mirrors into account, the CR-V is almost 2.1m (6ft 11in) wide, so you may even need to fold them in on very narrow sections of road.

The length between the front and rear wheels is known as the wheelbase, and - in general - the longer this is, the more space that passengers have inside the car. The CR-V is a bit of an exception to the rule, thiough. It’s got a shorter wheelbase than many rivals, but a spacious interior.

Honda CR-V boot space

If you’re looking for a crossover with a lot of boot space, then the CR-V is amongst the best. It’s beaten only by the Volkswagen Tiguan, which has sliding seats that allow you to boost luggage capacity at the expense of legroom in the back.

The CR-V’s boot opening is wide and low, which makes it easier to load bulky and heavy items.

Honda CR-V towing capacity

A popular tow car, the more powerful versions of the CR-V can legally tow up to two tonnes, although guidance from the Camping and Caravanning Club suggests that it’s safest to avoid towing anything that’s heavier than 85% of a car’s kerbweight (which would limit the CR-V to a maximum of 1465kg.

A two-tonne limit is fairly standard for a four-wheel drive crossover and every CR-V is fitted with Trailer Stability Assist, a safety system that helps to stabilise the car and trailer if it detects that the trailer is snaking left and right, and at risk of being out of control.

Honda CR-V weight

A car’s kerbweight indicates how heavy it is likely to be in real-world use, because it includes the weight of fuel, a driver and luggage. The CR-V is relatively average for a family crossover but not as light as a Peugeot 3008.

Honda CR-V fuel tank

Pick a petrol-powered CR-V and you’re unlikely to be able to cover 400 miles between fill-ups, but the car’s 58-litre fuel tank is a better fit for diesel cars. With official fuel economy figures as high as 64.2mpg in some CR-Vs, you’ll be able to cover 600 miles without needing to stop to refuel.

Honda CR-V turning circle

You’ll be in no doubt about the CR-V’s larger-than-average length and width when you try to manoeuvre. It needs a space that’s almost 12m wide to turn around in a single move. The reality is that you’re likely to be shuffling the car back and forth o get it out of tight parking spaces.
