Which used Jaguar F-Pace should you buy?

Launched in 2016 with a range of petrol and diesel engines, the Jaguar F-Pace is a practical SUV that was updated in 2020.

All post-2020 engines except the entry-level 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol feature mild hybrid technology for improved efficiency, while a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant offers an electric range of up to 33 miles per charge.

Which engine you should choose depends on your circumstances. All new versions are four-wheel drive (rear-wheel drive was available on older models) and come with an eight-speed automatic gearbox, so you get a terrific blend of all-weather reassurance and relaxed comfort.

The 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines offer reasonable performance, but the larger six-cylinder units are preferable if you’re prepared to stretch the budget, as these offer greater punch and refinement.

The Jaguar F-Pace SVR is the one to choose if you fancy a serious sports car but have children and a dog to take along for the ride. Alternatively, the Jaguar F-Pace PHEV blends performance and efficiency.

What used Jaguar F-Pace trim levels are available?

Before you choose a trim level, you have to select either the regular Jaguar F-Pace or Jaguar F-Pace R-Dynamic. 

The standard Jaguar F-Pace is a normal SUV without any added spice. Prices start from around £47,000, which is something to bear in mind when it comes to taxing a Jaguar F-Pace. All current models incur the premium rate of Vehicle Excise Duty (VED), more commonly known as road tax.

The Jaguar F-Pace R-Dynamic has a sportier appearance, with a package comprising cosmetic upgrades, 19-inch alloy wheels, an R-Dynamic-branded leather steering wheel, perforated grained leather seats and metal treadplates. Jaguar F-Pace R-Dynamic models also feature 12-way electric front seats and an electric tailgate.

Jaguar F-Pace S

Once you’ve chosen whether you want the standard Jaguar F-Pace or Jaguar F-Pace R-Dynamic, it’s time to add a few trimmings. If you’re looking at older models, check what’s featured on specific cars, as there have been a number of specification changes since the SUV was introduced in 2016.

Previously, there was a basic Jaguar F-Pace without a trim level and with only one engine option – a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine. It’s not a popular choice, and the well kitted out Jaguar F-Pace S will make more sense for most drivers. It includes:

Jaguar F-Pace SE

The mid-range Jaguar F-Pace SE is one of the sweet spots of the range, offering a compelling blend of price and equipment. On top of the Jaguar F-Pace S, it adds:

  • 20-inch alloy wheels
  • Keyless entry
  • Digital instrument panel
  • Electrically adjustable steering column
  • 16-way electric adjustment for the front seats

Jaguar F-Pace HSE

With the exception of the 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine, the Jaguar F-Pace HSE is available across the core range.  It’s a fitting range-topper, with the Jaguar F-Pace HSE feeling every inch the luxury SUV – although larger wheels do affect the ride quality. Key highlights include:

  • 21-inch alloy wheels
  • Meridian premium audio system
  • Heated and cooled leather seats
  • Rear collision monitor

 

Jaguar F-Pace SVR

The Jaguar F-Pace SVR feels more like a bespoke model than a trim level. It’s a Jaguar F-Pace coated in hot sauce, with power sourced from a fire-breathing 5.0-litre supercharged V8 engine producing 558PS. It’ll hit a top speed of 178mph and sprint from zero to 62mph quicker than many sports cars.

There are no trim levels with the Jaguar F-Pace SVR, so it’s a case of what you see is what you get – unless you fancy some optional extras. A lofty purchase price is matched by high running costs.

Is a used Jaguar F-Pace a good buy?

The Jaguar F-Pace is a stylish and practical SUV that rivals cars like the BMW X4 and Italy’s stylish Alfa Romeo Stelvio. 

There are two reasons why you might choose a Jaguar F-Pace over any of its rivals: the way it looks and the way it drives. Jaguar has successfully managed to use the styling of its sports cars and saloons to create one of the best-looking cars of this type.

It’s also extremely good to drive, with a range of smooth and powerful engines, along with sharp and composed handling. This is especially true if you opt for the range-topping high-performance Jaguar F-Pace SVR model, powered by that storming 558PS V8 engine.
