Kia’s latest Ceed is closer than ever in terms of quality to the Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus and is a match for most of the other cars in the class, including the Vauxhall Astra, Peugeot 308, Seat Leon, Honda Civic and its close relation, the Hyundai i30.

Kia has built its success in the last decade on designing and engineering its cars in Europe – and this car is no exception. Taking some cues from the recent Kia Stinger, the new Ceed (which has thankfully dropped the unnecessary apostrophe in the middle of its name) is now wider, longer and lower to enhance its sense of sportiness.

Inside, Kia continues to use good-quality, soft-touch plastics on all the upper surfaces that lend an air of sophistication. There’s certainly little to differentiate between this car and class-leading cars such as the Golf and Focus, which is praise indeed. The Ceed is also very spacious, with the rear seats positioned cleverly, feeling lower in the car, which provides really good headroom that should be able to accommodate passengers over 6ft in height, as well as plenty of legroom. This is certainly one of the best packaged family hatchbacks we’ve experienced.

The bootspace of 391 litres with the rear seats in place (it rises to 1,291 litres when those rear seats are folded down) is among the best on class, outshining the Golf, Mégane, Leon and Focus, and pointing to its real-world practicality.

Where the Ceed has always given ground to some of its rivals – especially the Focus and Golf – is in the department of on-road character. It's definitely much closer than it’s ever been to the class leaders, but it’s still not quite there yet. The handling offers good balance, consistent levels of grip and good body control, but the ride is something of a mixed bag: in models with 16-inch wheels, it copes well with bumps and rutted surfaces, but even the relatively minor increase to 17-inch wheels has an effect, adding a lumpiness to the ride quality. So it's close, but no cigar.

The engine range is straightforward and easy to navigate: two petrol engines and a diesel, each of which offers something different to buyers – and while diesels are unfashionable these days, this newly developed unit is refined and impressively quiet.

All Ceeds have plenty of standard equipment, with the base 2 trim level featuring one of the most comprehensive specifications in the class. Choose a more expensive trim and there’s an eight-inch touchscreen with satellite navigation and host of additional safety features.

The family hatchback class has always been hugely competitive, with the Focus and Golf ruling the roost for many years. But Kia can justifiably say that the new Ceed is breathing down VW and Ford’s necks, offering better build quality than most of its rivals, a lot of kit for a competitive price and accomplished engines.
