Range Rover Evoque Convertible (2016-2019) Review

As a luxury convertible SUV, the Range Rover Evoque is stylish but not very practical

Strengths & weaknesses

  • Head-turning looks
  • Premium feel inside and out
  • Off-road ability
  • Small boot with awkward 'letter box' style access
  • Extra weight makes the Evoque slower
  • Expensive
Limited Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Convertible stock available.

Nobody needs a Range Rover Evoque, but the car’s style, luxurious interior and comfortable ride means that tens of thousands of owners are willing to pay a premium for it.

But is an Evoque with the roof chopped off a step too far. It’s just as luxurious, more distinctive and quite a bit pricier. Land Rover claims that thousands of people have placed a deposit.

Based on the three-door Evoque Coupe and available with either a diesel or petrol engine, the Evoque Convertible remains smooth on the road.

If you wanted to take it off-road, it’s fitted with Land Rover’s exceptionally able technology that allows the car to forge through ditches, crawl up mountains and wade through water up to half a metre in depth.
However, there are some downsides to this image-conscious machine and they include a very small boot, which is accessed via an irritating 'letter box' style opening at the rear and cramped rear seats.

The hefty weight of the electric folding roof mechanism, which lowers in 21 seconds, reduces performance. There is an obvious delay after you press the accelerator, when the engine revs as it builds up the power to haul the almost two-tonne Evoque Convertible along the road. It’s even slower going uphill.

The interior wasn’t really designed with an open roof in mind: the dashboard’s hi-tech 10.2in touchscreen is very difficult to see in direct light, which is basically every time the roof is lowered on a sunny day: it’s enough to make you pray for cloudy weather.

Even so, this won’t put off buyers who are willing to pay at least £47,500 (not including the Range Rover Evoque Convertible deals that are available) for the style and luxury of an off-road convertible.

Best Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Convertible for...

Best for Economy – Range Rover Evoque Convertible TD4 Automatic HSE Dynamic

The silky smooth diesel engine is by far the most fuel-efficient engine in the range. It's also the cheapest to tax on an annual basis.

Best for Families – Range Rover Evoque Convertible TD4 Automatic HSE Dynamic

Best isn’t really the word to use here. The Evoque is eminently unsuitable for families. But if you want to put the ids in the back, go for HSE Dynamic trim, which doesn’t have the wind deflector that helps reduce buffeting. You won’t need it, as it renders both rear seats unusable.

Best for Performance – Range Rover Evoque Convertible Si4 Automatic HSE Dynamic

The powerful turbocharged petrol engine ensures the 0-62mph sprint is complete in 8.6 seconds. It also sounds better than the diesel when cruising with the roof down.

Understanding Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Convertible names

Trim HSE Dynamic

There are two trims in total (HSE Dynamic and HSE Dynamic LUX). Each higher level means more equipment, technology and a larger price.

Engine TD4

Two engines are available: the TD4 diesel and the Si4 petrol.

Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Convertible Engines

TD4 diesel and Si4 petrol

There isn't a vast choice when it comes to selecting the best engine for your Range Rover Evoque Convertible but it is worth considering the sort of life your new car is likely to lead.

The Si4 petrol is by far the best for those wanting the fastest performance, as it produces 240 horsepower and manages to complete the 0-62mph sprint in just 8.6 seconds.

The diesel engine is incredibly smooth and quiet. It’s more efficient than the petrol engine but not as powerful. You don’t notice a big difference because the diesel engine has plenty of urge without having to rev it hard. However, when the convertible hood is lowered, there's no escaping the gentle rattling sound of a diesel.

Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Convertible Trims

HSE Dynamic and HSE Dynamic LUX

The Evoque Convertible is designed to sit at the very pinnacle of the range, so even 'basic' HSE Dynamic models come very well equipped. Expect to find the latest technology, including a rear-view camera for easier parking manoeuvres, configurable interior mood lighting and Land Rover's new 10.2-inch touch screen infotainment system.

The unit boasts the latest InControl apps, which allow for seamless smartphone tethering, as well as InControl Touch Pro Navigation, which is clear, easy to use and ultra-precise - a far cry from the clunky Jaguar Land Rover units of old.

Further standard niceties include razor sharp Xenon headlights, 20-inch alloy wheels, a heated front screen and full leather seats, which also benefit from 12-way heating - a must for anyone thinking of dropping the top in the colder months.

Step up to HSE Dynamic LUX and Land Rover will throw in Full Park Assist, which uses autonomous driving systems to park the car with minimal input from the driver. A Surround Camera System further aids manoeuvrability, while Lane Keep Assist, where the car wans the driver if he or she strays out of lane, and Traffic Sign Recognition add an extra level of convenience.

Finally, HSE Dynamic LUX also sees a wind deflector added to the rear of the cabin, which reduces buffeting when driving at speed with the roof lowered, as well as a neat ski hatch that allows longer items to poke through the boot between the rear seats.

Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Convertible Reliability and warranty

The 3-years/unlimited mileage warranty will be a welcome addition to many but it's almost expected on a car that costs the best part of £50,000 in its most basic form. Land Rover also offers protection on its paintwork for the life of the warranty, including an anti-corrosion warranty for those who are thinking of taking their Evoque wading.

Land Rovers have got a poor reputation for reliability and the Evoque range was only ranked mid-table for reliability in the 2016 Auto Express Driver Power customer satisfaction survey.

Used Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Convertible

There are few used Range Rover Evoque Convertibles available, as the car was only recently launched. Those that do come onto the market are not expected to be cheap because demand for the car is likely to keep prices high.
Analysts from CAP, an automotive data company, predict that the Evoque Convertible will still be worth more than half of its brand new list price after three years and 30,000 miles, making it one of the best cars on sale for keeping its value
