This is the new Mercedes CLA Coupe, a variation of the Mercedes A-Class that takes much of the insides of the smallest hatchback in the range and covers them with a sleek and desirable coupe body. Prices start from around £6,000 more than the standard A-Class, but the CLA is only available in the more expensive AMG Line trim and it's Premium variants in which case the CLA is only around £3,000 more expensive.

It's the coupe styling that sets the new Mercedes CLA apart from the A-Class, anyone wanting that Mercedes badge attached to a car that's a little more interesting to look at and much more satisfying to drive should definitely take a closer look. The CLA wont offer the same practicality that you get with the hatchback, but this car is very much targeted at drivers who have no need or want for it.

In terms of engines, the new Mercedes CLA also shares these with the A-Class; there's a choice of four petrol engines ranging from a 136hp 1.3-litre option at the low end to a 2.0-litre 224hp at the high end. There's also a single 2.0-litre diesel offering, which is suitable for cruising if you'd rather sit back and relax in your stylish coupe.

Mercedes has struggled to maintain a high level of interior quality in recent years; alongside an Audi or a Volkswagen, the Mercedes CLA looks and feels cheaper. There's plenty of tech on board, and the MBUX media system is also available with its 'Hey Mercedes' voice control features.

One thing that is immediately apparent with the new Mercedes CLA is the low, sloping roof that cuts a large portion of headroom from the rear seats. There's still just enough space for a couple of adults to squeeze in the back, although whoever gets to sit in the passenger will have a more enjoyable journey.
