The new Renault ZOE five-door hatchback may just be the car to persuade you to go electric. Its predecessor had a fully charged range of around 100 miles – fine for town driving but not so good if you planned to travel farther afield. The entry-level version of the new car is still available with this range but from then on, it comes with a bigger battery, called the Z.E 4.0, that increases the range to 250 miles in ideal conditions.

At a stroke, it transforms the ZOE into a realistic alternative to a fossil-fuelled car – as long as you have a home charging point or when you’re farther away, can find a public one that is convenient and available.

Underway, the ZOE is smooth, quiet and responsive. It’s powerful, too, easily capable of staying with fast-moving motorway traffic. In short, it’s like driving any well-sorted car, only now it has the reassurance of a greater range than before.

Those batteries don’t come at the expense of interior room, either. The ZOE’s interior boasts plenty of head and legroom, front and rear, and the boot is actually larger than the one in the Renault Clio.

It's well equipped, too, especially in Dynamique Nav trim, the first in the range to have the larger battery. That said, if you’re a town dweller who rarely ventures further than the shops, you’ll find Expression Nav trim, which comes with the smaller battery, perfectly acceptable. You can buy your Zoe and battery as one, or you can lease the battery separately. Lease rates are linked to your anticipated mileage.

Good looking, with a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating and now with a 250-mile range, the ZOE is a convincing alternative to a conventionally powered hatchback.
