The Vauxhall Astra is a top recommendation in our list of best family cars, with efficient engines, a spacious interior and comfortable ride.

To give you a better idea if the five-door hatchback is the ideal model for you, we’ve listed its dimensions, boot space and weight below.

You can read in-depth about the car in our Vauxhall Astra buying guide, or search for new and used Vauxhall Astra deals.

Vauxhall Astra dimensions: exterior

The Vauxhall Astra is a little shorter than the previous generation Astra that it replaced, but it’s still fairly average for a family car.

That means that its size shouldn’t cause any problems and you’ll be able to get through width restrictors, which are often just 2m wide. Like most modern cars, it will still be a tight squeeze in some of the narrower multi-storey car parks.

 Vauxhall Astra boot space

There are cars such as the Skoda Octavia and Peugeot 308 that offer at least 100 litres more boot space than the Astra’s 370 litres. But if you load it up neatly, then the Vauxhall should be adequate for most families. It has plenty of space for a buggy and weekly shop.

Vauxhall Astra towing capacity

If you do use the Astra for towing, you’ll find that the weight limits are fairly standard for this type of car. Bear in mind that you’ll be pushing it to its limits if you try to hook up a small family caravan.

Maximum towing capacity: braked

900 - 1700kg

Vauxhall Astra weight

The Astra is fitted with modern lightweight engines, and this means that even the heaviest version weighs less than 1.4 tonnes, which is lighter than many rivals and helps to reduce fuel consumption.

The kerbweight includes the weight of a driver, luggage and fuel to make it a realistic measure of how heavy a car will be in normal use.

Vauxhall Astra fuel tank

Drive smoothly in an Astra with the most efficient 1.6-litre 110hp engine and you might be able to travel 800 miles before having to fill up: an impressive feat for a family car.

The Vauxhall’s 48-litre fuel tank is a good size for the whole range, including the thirstiest petrol engine, which should manage at least 400 miles between stops.

Vauxhall Astra turning circle

The turning circle of a car is a measure of how much space it needs to turn around in the opposite direction. The Astra’s 11.05m is fairly standard for a family car. You’ll still need to carry out a three-point turn on most roads, though.
