Cars that cost less than an iPhone X contract

Get on the road for the same monthly cost as a new phone: ten cars that cost less than an iPhone X

For £83 a month, you could have Apple’s latest, shiniest iPhone X or - for the same price or less - a whole car.

There are dozens of approved used cars available on finance agreements that will cost you less per month than Apple's latest gadget. We’ve selected ten of the best below.

Monthly payments for car finance and mobile phone contracts vary enormously, based on your deposit and length of contract. We’ve used EE’s Apple iPhone X offer of a 64GB phone on a deal with 100GB of data with a £9.99 upfront payment.

All of the used car prices are based on four-year PCP finance deals with a 10% deposit, using examples of cars on sale at the time of publication. At the end of the agreement, you can hand the car back or pay a lump sum to own it. The images may not show the exact specification.

Peugeot 208

Typical example Peugeot 208 1.0 VTi Active
Monthly price £83  Deposit £518  Age 2014 (63)

There are plenty of Peugeot 108 city cars for less than £80 a month, but you can upgrade to a far more sophisticated and spacious Peugeot 208. A handful of models cost from £83 a month, and there’s much more choice if you increase your budget to £90.

Fiat 500

Typical example Fiat 500 1.2 Pop
Monthly price £77  Deposit £468  Age 2014 (14)

The classic design of the Fiat 500 has barely aged, so you could buy one that's a decade old and still looks new - let alone one that's only three years old.

Entry-level Pop versions of the ever-popular city car start from just over £75 per month, with all of the Fiat's charm, if a little lacking in basic equipment (such as air conditioning). But with hundreds of cars to choose from, £15 more a month brings the choice of better-equipped Lounge models.

Vauxhall Corsa

Typical example Vauxhall Corsa 1.2 Excite 3dr
Monthly price £82  Deposit £518  Age 2014 (14)

If you’re looking for a low-price, practical car, then it’s impossible to avoid the Vauxhall Corsa. There’s so much choice, prices are among the lowest for a supermini of its size, and there are no major downsides to the car.

For £83 a month or less, you’ll be looking at the cars that are around three years old, from the previous generation, which is no longer sold new.

Volkswagen up!

Typical example Volkswagen Take up! 1.0 60PS 3dr
Monthly price £76  Deposit £517  Age 2015 (15)

It’s the size of a small city car, but can accommodate four average-size adults, making the VW up! manoeuvrable and practical. It’s also in demand, which means that it will still be worth a reasonable amount for years to come - reducing your monthly payments.

There are several cars available for less than £83 a month, which are mainly three-door cars (so you’ll have to scramble through the front doors to get into the back), and with the least powerful 60hp engine, which is fine in town but a little slow on motorways.

Seat Ibiza

Typical example Seat Ibiza Toca 1.4 85 Sport Tourer
Monthly price £83  Deposit £547  Age 2013 (13)

In this price range, it’s hard to beat the Seat Ibiza for space, because some of the cheapest models on sale are the estate versions of this supermini, offering a big boot for under £83 a month or less.

The extra bodywork at the back makes the car look a little less stylish, but you can’t tell when you’re behind the wheel, where it still feels nippy.

Toyota Aygo

Typical example Toyota Aygo i-Move
Monthly price £76  Deposit £518  Age 2013 (63)

The five year warranty included with Aygo models means that you might only be spending £76 a month on the car, but you can still enjoy full protection under the manufacturer’s warranty into next year.

As one of the most popular city cars on sale, there’s a decent choice of models - even at this low price, so you have a better chance of finding a colour and specification that you like.

Fiat Panda

Typical example Fiat Panda 1.2 Pop
Monthly price £77  Deposit £443  Age 2014 (64)

For bucket-loads of character for less than £80 a month, you can’t beat the Fiat Panda. Its square-shaped dials, tiny panda lettering on interior plastics, and cute-but-boxy design stand out amongst some fairly bland alternatives.

It’s comfortable and nippy in town, where the small engines are best-suited and the design touches help to disguise the cheap interior plastics that have been used to keep the price down.

Renault Clio

Typical example Renault Clio 1.2 Expression+ 3dr
Monthly price £77  Deposit £418  Age 2013 (62)

It’s getting harder to find good examples of the previous-generation Renault Clio but it’s not too late to snap up a bargain.

Highly rated for its comfort and interior space compared with rivals of the time, the French supermini is at home in town and capable on the motorway.

Skoda Citigo

Typical example Skoda Citigo SE 1.0 MPI 60PS
Monthly price £79  Deposit £467  Age 2014 (64)

Skoda’s version of the Volkswagen up! is virtually identical, except for the badges and front grille. That means that you benefit from the same interior space, ride comfort and general sense of quality as in the VW.

If you’re paying in cash then the Skoda usually costs less than the Volkswagen, but finance payments are roughly similar. That’s because they take into account how quickly the car loses value - and the VW is expected to be worth more than the Skoda after three years.

Dacia Sandero

Typical example Dacia Sandero 1.2 Ambiance
Monthly price £80  Deposit £468  Age 2014 (64)

Britain’s cheapest car is, unsurprisingly, even better value as a used car. You’ll pay from around £80 a month for a three-year-old Sandero in Ambiance trim, which has the radio, air conditioning and electric front windows that are missing from entry-level Access cars.

The Sandero is considerably more spacious than the city cars on this page, so it’s a practical choice for a family, with space in the back.
