Renault Megane plug-in hybrid: price, range and performance

The Renault Megane is now available with plug-in hybrid power and up to 217mpg – but only in estate form for now

Renault has already launched hybrid versions of its Clio supermini and Captur small SUV, and it’s now added petrol-electric power to the Megane. In the Megane’s case, it’s a 1.6-litre petrol engine that’s supported by a pair of electric motors - and, for the time being, hybrid power is only available in the estate version.

Like many other plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), the Megane hybrid promises to be very good when it comes to fuel economy - at least if you charge the car regularly. Renault claims the car is able to return up to a very impressive 217mpg, and it also says the Megane can be driven up to 30 miles on a full battery charge. Drive beyond that distance without charging and the car will resort to burning more petrol again and the economy will plummet.

Plug-in power aside, the Renault Megane PHEV is otherwise identical inside and out to the regular version. As a result, it also benefits from the tweaks and changes made during the recent mid-life update, such as the lightly updated touchscreen tech and the minor cosmetic changes such as the slimmer LED daytime running lights.

The only big difference between the regular Renault Megane estate and the PHEV version can be found in the boot. While still fairly spacious, the Megane PHEV’s luggage space of 434 litres with the rear seats up and 1,247 litres with them folded down is quite a bit down on the conventional car’s capacities of 521 litres and 1,433 litres respectively. That means that bootspace is more like what you'd expect from an ordinary non-PHEV hatchback, so if you want the biggest boot, you'll want to choose something else.

2020 Renault Megane plug-in hybrid economy and performance

Renault says the plug-in hybrid Megane uses 'F1-inspired' technology, but that doesn’t mean it’s a fast or powerful car. The 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine produces 160hp and 144Nm of torque (in addition to the 205Nm from the two electric motors), which results in a 0-62mph acceleration time of 9.8 seconds and a top speed of 111mph. That's similar to what you get from many entry-level hatchbacks.

However, while the plug-in Renault Megane is respectable when to comes to performance, it’s much more impressive with its on-paper efficiency. CO2 emissions are rated at a very low 30g/km, and Renault says the petrol-electric Megane can return up to 217mpg - though how often you’ll match that in day-to-day driving will depend on your speed, the journey time and how often you charge the battery pack. Run the batteries down and don't recharge and you can expect to burn through far more petrol.

The Megane PHEV’s fuel economy can also be affected by the driving mode that’s been selected. Depending on the chosen setting, the petrol engine and electric motors can work together to either maximise fuel economy or boost performance, and there’s even a mode that will limit the car to electric-only running for as long as there’s enough charge in the batteries.

The plug-in hybrid Megane Sport Tourer has a 9.3kWh battery pack, which Renault claims is big enough to allow a range of up to 30 miles of electric-only driving on a single charge. While that should be good enough for short trips to work or the shops on electric power alone, how far you’ll be able to travel before the petrol engine kicks in will be affected by your speed. Drive fast and you can expect that range to drop.

Renault hasn’t yet said how long it will take to recharge the battery - which is odd, since it’s already quoted charging times for the Captur PHEV that uses the exact same setup as the Megane. Therefore, using the Captur’s specs for reference, we expect it will take roughly three hours to fully recharge the Megane’s batteries using a 3.7kW charging point - or about four hours and 15 minutes if your only option is a three-pin plug socket at home.

Renault Megane plug-in hybrid buyers should find it very easy to pic the ideal spec of their car, as it’s only available in two trims: Iconic and R.S. Line. That makes Iconic the entry-level version, it is still fairly well-equipped - features that come as standard include front and rear parking sensors, cruise control, a lane departure warning safety assist and a seven-inch touchscreen media system that you can connect your smartphone to using Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Meanwhile, R.S. Line spec for the most part gives the plug-in hybrid Megane a subtly sportier makeover. Restyled front and rear bumpers help make the car look a bit more like the Megane R.S. hot hatch version, for instance, and interior changes include 'R.S.' badging on the dashboard and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

Not all of the R.S. Line’s extras are purely cosmetic, either. The top-trim Renault Megane plug-in hybrid comes with a larger 9.3-inch touchscreen, and there’s also a 10-inch digital instrument display that replaces the smaller seven-inch item on the standard car.

2020 Renault Megane plug-in hybrid prices and delivery dates

Prices for the plug-in hybrid Renault Megane estate will start at £30,685 for the entry-level Iconic model, and increase to £32,685 for the top-sec R.S. Line version.

The car goes on sale in August 2020 and, while Renault hasn’t yet confirmed delivery dates, it’s expected that Megane Sport Tourer deliveries will begin later this year.
