It's often said that German cars exhibit excellent build quality, and that can certainly be said about the cars that roll out of the Volkswagen factory. If you're currently on the hunt for a quality car you'll no doubt have cast your eyes over the likes of BMW, Mercedes and Audi which tend to be expensive, but VW is a slightly more affordable option that doesn't sacrifice any of that quality.

The Volkswagen model range is enormous, so chances are if you're in the market for your next car, whether it's small city cars or spacious and luxurious saloons, there's probably going to be a VW on your list of options.

Whether it's the small but practical VW Polo, or the gargantuan VW Touareg, those and everything in between are some of the best quality cars you can buy, and compared to alternatives on offer from the likes of Mercedes, they're pretty affordable too.

Even if you're on the lookout for a hybrid or even a fully electric car, Volkswagen offers a choice of those as well. If you're keen to get stuck into great value finance deals, this list of options available on BuyaCar is a great place to start.

Best Volkswagen PCP deals

Volkswagen Up offers

Volkswagen's city car is one of the best on the market. There's more space inside than its diminutive dimensions would suggest, so you will be able to squeeze a pair of passengers into the back seats. It's best to restrict this to shorter journeys, though; there isn't much room in the back to get comfy.

We suggest avoiding the basic Take Up entry-level version and focusing on later models that are equipped with a radio, a media display, and a USB port for connecting your phone.

Most engines are reasonably nippy around town but take a while to accelerate on faster roads. That's not the case with the more powerful TSI-badged car, which is better suited to motorway driving. The Up GTi is positively quick and fun to drive, while the expensive e-up electric version is becoming more readily available on the used market.

Volkswagen Polo offers

Spacious, comfortable and well-built: the latest Volkswagen Polo is so large and sophisticated that it may well be the only car that you'll need - the only trouble is that it's not much easier to park than the bigger Golf.

Alternatively, you can save thousands of pounds and choose the previous-generation Polo which is not at all shabby by any standards. Its solid interior ages well and you can still fit adults into the back, although taller passengers will feel cramped.

Volkswagen Golf offers

The VW Golf's solid and dependable image may not ignite passion amongst car buyers, but it certainly ticks plenty of boxes if you're looking for a practical car. This is the previous-generation version that was replaced in 2020, but it's still readily available as a used car, and a great alternative to the new one if you need to save some cash.

At times it feels like it's been designed to a formula, drawn up to give rear passengers just enough space to be comfortable, to provide a boot that's just large enough for a family, and to deliver just enough power for reasonable acceleration.

It makes the Golf an excellent all-round car. The interior has a quality feel and excellent levels of equipment. All but entry-level models include adaptive cruise control that maintains a set distance from the car in front, along with air-conditioning and a touchscreen. Models produced between 2017 and 2020 come with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Volkswagen T-Cross offers

A taller version of the Volkswagen Polo, the new VW T-Cross crossover car brings more space and a higher driving position for not a great deal more money.

It's comfortable, nimble, practical and extremely well-equipped, with an eight-inch touchscreen, wireless phone charging and bright LED headlights as standard.

If the concept appeals, then the T-Cross is one of the best cars of its type. However, it's so new that there are few used examples around, but you should be able to save on a brand new model.

Volkswagen T-Roc offers

As the T-Cross, above, is a taller version of the Volkswagen Polo so the VW T-Roc is meant to provide all of the benefits of the Volkswagen Golf, along with a higher driving position and larger boot.

It does this well, managing to be comfortable and stable in corners, as well as quiet at steady speeds - like a Golf. It's not a cheap option when new, which makes the savings available on nearly-new models more attractive.

Volkswagen Tiguan offers

Where Volkswagen's other tall crossover cars might cut it for young families, the VW Tiguan is the model you'll want as your children get older.

The well-built interior has masses of space, and useful touches, such as rear seats that can slide backwards and forwards, so you can increase and decrease legroom or boot space as needed.

Used prices are reasonable for the current car, which has been on sale in 2016. The previous generation is also available with the same solid VW feel and space for the family, but at an even lower price.

Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace offers

A seven-seat version of the current Volkswagen Tiguan, the Tiguan Allspace is longer, and with a bigger boot - when the rear row is folded.

It's sold with a high specification, which makes it expensive for new car buyers. Used car deals do make it more affordable, but it's far from the cheapest seven-seat option you can buy, with the Skoda Kodiaq and Kia Sorento offering decent value for money.

Volkswagen Touareg offers

The biggest Volkswagen SUV is good enough to tempt you away from the more expensive Audi Q7, as it matches that car's build quality and improves on the technology - particularly on higher-end R-Line Tech models, which has a huge 15-inch dashboard-mounted media system next to another 12.3-inch digital instrument display behind the steering wheel.

The boot's enormous, but it does only have five seats - unlike the Q7 or other large SUVs like the BMW X5. Also available is the previous-generation Tourareg - another enormous and comfortable SUV.

Volkswagen Passat offers

When it comes to design, space, price and the way it drives, the Volkswagen Passat is the sensible, practical option if you're looking for a spacious car. It offers everything that most car buyers will ever need, without necessarily providing a lot of what they may just want.

It's a formula that plenty of drivers are delighted to buy into, particularly as used car prices - including finance quotes - tend to be more affordable than other similar options.

There's an extremely sensible estate option, along with the plug-in hybrid GTE model. An updated version (pictured above), has recently gone on sale.

Volkswagen Arteon offers

The Volkswagen Arteon addresses the one major criticism of the Volkswagen Passat: the lack of excitement.

It uses the same mechanical parts as the Passat but clothes them in a much more interesting design, with a grille that seems to merge into the headlights and a curved roof.

Elsewhere, it's not a great deal different from the Passat, which means that the interior is well-laid out and the car is quiet and reasonably composed over bumps, without being nimble and exciting to drive.

Volkswagen Touran offers

The VW Touran is another model based on the Golf, but this time Volkswagen has taken the same basic parts and turned them into a large seven-seat people carrier. It's big enough to carry seven adults in comfort, although making use of all the available seats does restrict boot space to only 137 litres, which is much smaller than even the VW Up.

Despite its ungainly van-like size and shape, the Touran still feels like a car to drive, the steering is light, and the power from the 2.0-litre diesel engine is enough to stop it from feeling slow. The extra height of this car does result in noticeable wind noise at speed, though.

Volkswagen Sharan offers

Sliding rear doors and more space makes the Sharan a more practical choice than the smaller VW Touran people carrier. Both cars have seven seats, but the Sharan is the only one that offers a reasonable amount of boot space when all are in use - although the 300-litre area isn't overly generous.

Seats folded, the car becomes more van-like - only when it comes to luggage. It's quiet and comfortable with light steering, making it less stressful to drive than you might think.
