Best used 2016-present Kia Sportage PCP finance deals

Is this the ultimate no-compromise budget SUV, from less than £150 per month, with tonnes of standard kit, plenty of space and sharp looks?

It's not difficult to see why the Kia Sportage is so popular. It's packed with equipment, stylish in its way and surprisingly enjoyable to drive, all while offering that high-riding SUV driving position at a very reasonable price.

Much has changed since the Sportage name first appeared in 1993, when it was neither appealing to drive nor to look at. The latest model launched in 2015 and it's virtually unrecognisable from those primitive roots. Things have got better still since another overhaul in 2018 brought even sharper styling and handling.

The list of boxes the Kia Sportage ticks is long; it's proved immensely popular in the UK and became Kia's best selling model in 2019 with over 34,500 cars; that's a huge amount of sales.

The range of choice on offer is huge too: there are five engines, three gearboxes and seven trim levels to choose from, though the further up you climb, the less sense the Sportage makes as a bargain SUV. In 2018, Kia made minor modifications to the Sportage, most notable were upgrades to the petrol engines that achieved lower emissions figures you can get more details with our Kia Sportage buyers' guide.

Kia also offers an impressive seven-year, 100,000-mile warranty that is transferable to subsequent owners, so even when buying used, in most cases you should still have peace of mind for years to come. There are currently 347 great Kia Sportage deals on BuyaCar for the latest generation, so you have plenty of choice. Prices start at £10,045 or £239 a month with PCP finance.

Kia Sportage 1 offers

The ‘1’ is the entry-level trim option for the Kia Sportage and offers a reasonable level of equipment. Inside, you get a seven-inch touchscreen media system, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay with voice control, Bluetooth, air-conditioning, cruise control, all-round electric windows and a reversing camera. Outside, the Sportage comes with 16-inch alloy wheels, front fog lights and LED daytime running lights.

The ‘1’ is only available with the least-powerful petrol and diesel engines and as a manual only. The non-turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol is overwhelmed by the size and weight of the car, but the 1.7-litre diesel is much more pleasant to drive and more economical, too.

If you want an SUV on a budget, you won’t find much to grumble about by choosing a Sportage ‘1’ - provided you choose the diesel option.

Kia Sportage 2 offers

Moving up to the Sportage 2 adds 17-inch alloy wheels, sat-nav with TomTom connected services, dual-zone air-conditioning, heated front and outer rear seats and cutting-edge safety tech like lane-keeping assistance and high beam assist and an intelligent speed limit warning function.

The Kia Sportage ‘2’ is great value for money as you get plenty of kit at a reasonable price - and it unlocks the turbocharged petrol engine, which gives the Sportage much-needed oomph and refinement. The ‘2’ is our choice as it strikes the best balance between kit and price.

Kia Sportage Platinum Edition offers

Platinum Edition is just one of the handful of special editions that have been available in the Sportage range. On top of the ‘2’, you get a heated steering wheel, a bigger touchscreen display for the media system, front and rear LED lights, leather seats and electric front seat adjustment.

The Platinum Edition is still relatively new, so they're few and far between, and you’ll be paying more to get your hands on one, although we’re not sure if it’s worth the extra outlay over a ‘2’.

Kia Sportage Edition 25 offers

To celebrate 25 years of the Sportage, Kia launched a special ‘Edition 25’ trim that’s only available with the 1.6-litre GDi engine. Largely based on the ‘4’, the ‘Edition 25’ comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, black cloth and leather seats, and premium paint. Other highlights include engine start/stop with a keyless entry system, an eight-speaker JBL sound system with subwoofer, external amp and front centre speaker plus an eight-inch touchscreen media system with sat-nav.

The ‘Edition 25’ comes with all the bells and whistles so expect a higher price tag again, but if you value a good sound system and some additional luxury, it’s worth paying the extra for.

Kia Sportage 4 offers

Step up to the ‘4’ and you get 19-inch alloy wheels, a 360-degree camera to make parking easier, an eight-speaker JBL sound system and a panoramic sunroof. A word of caution, though: those larger wheels give the Sportage a less comfortable ride.

It also has the option of the new 2.0-litre mild hybrid diesel, but there isn’t that much improvement in fuel economy or emissions for us to recommend it over the lower-powered versions. Especially as this 2.0-litre diesel option is pricey. Get a good deal used, though, and it might be more reasonable.

While you get a lot more upmarket kit with the ‘4’, if you’re not going to use it, you’re best off sticking with a ‘1’ or a ‘2’.

Kia Sportage GT Line offers

GT Line is a sportier trim level and gives you all the kit of the ‘2’ as well as bigger wheels, redesigned front fog lights, black leather seats with red piping and black headlining. At a price.

At this level, the Sportage starts to make less sense as a budget SUV. We don’t think the changes justify the additional expense over a ‘2’ and those big wheels make the ride much firmer too, without much payback in terms of greater cornering ability.

Kia Sportage GT Line S offers

GT Line S is the top of the range trim level and blends the spec of the ‘4’ with the sportiness of the GT Line. It also adds a wireless phone charger, a powered boot release and a choice of drive modes.

These top-of-the-range models are also only available with the higher-powered diesel engines (including the mild hybrid) or turbocharged petrol in automatic only. This is no doubt a well-specced car but at this level the Sportage begins to look pricey and we wouldn’t blow our monthly budget to have one over a lower-spec version, especially when there are many more high-quality options available at this kind of price on the used market.
