The Vauxhall Astra offers good value when new, but second-hand deals make it an even better value purchase as a cheap used family car

The Vauxhall Astra is a family car that’s really well equipped, good to drive and available with low prices. There are plenty for sale second-hand, too, so finding a great used Vauxhall Astra deal isn’t difficult - it’s just about finding the right one for you.

The Astra is a similar size and shape to the Volkswagen Golf, Ford Focus and Peugeot 308. It’s pitched as a cheaper alternative to those models, so tends to be good value considering the amount of standard kit you get, especially second-hand as the Astra loses value quickly from new - which is great news for those getting a used model.

Yet the Astra is surprisingly good to drive, too. It’s more entertaining than a VW Golf, for example, even though it’s not as much fun as a Ford Focus. The Astra is enjoyable on a twisty road but because it’s also comfortable, it works well no matter what kind of roads you usually drive on.

Over the years there have been plenty of engines available in the Astra. Lower-powered versions use a 1.0-litre petrol engine, which is impressively strong considering its small size, but there are more powerful and larger petrols available too. Those looking for maximum fuel economy might want to consider one of the punchy diesel engines, and there’s a choice of manual and automatic gearboxes.

There’s also an estate version called the Astra Sports Tourer, which extends the boot to create more interior space. However, even the normal hatchback model is practical, with a big boot and plenty of space for passengers in the rear seats.

One thing to be aware of when buying a used Astra is that many are used as company cars, rental cars, or otherwise haven’t been owned by the driver themselves. You may want to check for signs of this, such as worn seats, scratches, and other damage caused by careless users. There are so many for sale that you can always find another. If you don't mind this, it could be reflected with a lower price.

Let’s take a look at the main specifications available for the latest version of the Astra. Vauxhall has used similar trim names in the past, so some older Astras will have the same name but different equipment as standard - so check that any specific car you're looking to buy has all the kit you want, before signing on the dotted line.

Vauxhall Astra SE deals

The Vauxhall Astra range starts with the SE, which costs from around £19,000 when new, though used models are available at much lower price points.

The Astra SE is pretty well-equipped for a base model, which is good news for bargain hunters. It comes with 16-inch alloy wheels, air-conditioning, cruise control, electric windows all around, LED daytime running lights, and hill start assist.

It also comes with a seven-inch touchscreen media system with digital radio, Bluetooth, USB connection and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay functions. This means you can use your phone as a sat-nav and media device easily.

Vauxhall Astra Business Edition Nav deals

Upgrading to the Business Edition Nav - just under £20,000 when new - adds sat-nav to the list of technology, as you might expect from the name of the trim level.

Yet this version also comes with a leather steering wheel, LED headlights, automatic windscreen wipers, ambient interior lights, a front armrest, and some different alloy wheels, making it a good value option if you'd like any of this extra equipment.

Vauxhall Astra SRi deals

The Vauxhall Astra SRi is a popular trim level and you’ll find plenty for sale. New prices for these versions start at around £21,000.

SRi trim actually doesn’t come with sat-nav, but you get the same seven-inch media system here with smartphone connectivity and everything else on SE models. The SRi also comes with larger 17-inch alloy wheels, LED lights, heated door mirrors, sports-style front seats, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, and front fog lights.

The SRi also comes with the Driving Assistance Pack, which brings automatic emergency braking (AEB), a forward collision warning, lane departure assist and a following distance indicator to tell you when you get too close to the car in front. An electronic handbrake is also included here.

Vauxhall Astra SRi Nav deals

The Astra SRi Nav is only £500 more than the SRi when new and adds sat-nav, so it’s well worth the upgrade for many people getting a brand new model and many drivers will have done exactly this.

That means you’ll see lots of these for sale used - giving you plenty of choice - and thanks to the addition of a sat-nav system, it’s a great model to go for.

Vauxhall Astra Griffin Edition deals

Griffin Edition is a newer trim in the Astra range, but it’s great value, as it costs from around £19,000 when new.

It comes with sat-nav as standard, plus all the other features of the Vauxhall’s seven-inch media system. It also has climate control, interior ambient lighting, ergonomic seats (approved by AGR for offering good comfort levels), heated seats, a heated steering wheel, 18-inch alloy wheels, tinted windows, a black roof, and front and rear parking sensors.

It also comes with all the safety kit from the SRi model.

Vauxhall Astra Elite Nav deals

The top-spec Astra Elite Nav is the most expensive version when new, at roughly £26,000. It does come with lots of extra equipment, but the price increase is quite a big jump from the previous trim - when new, at least.

The Elite Nav model gets sat-nav as standard but it’s on a larger eight-inch screen, which also includes all the smartphone, Bluetooth and digital radio features on the cheaper models. There’s also an eight-inch digital display instead of traditional dials behind the steering wheel.

There’s dual-zone climate control, sports seats with heating and perforated leather trim, extra USB ports in the rear, and different 17-inch alloys, as well. Keyless entry and start is fitted too, along with everything found on the lower-spec models above.
