Luxury in a car can mean different things to different people. For some, it’s acres of wood and leather. For others, it’s all about high-tech kit and gadgets. And for yet others, plenty of interior and boot space plus robust functionality is a true luxury.

Here we’ve listed eight cars that we think are genuinely special on the inside, whether it’s because they deliver a fantastically luxurious ambiance, loads of space, or just stand out head and shoulders above similar cars from rival manufacturers in terms of equipment, comfort or class.

Best cars with luxury interiors

1. Honda e

Best city car interior

Used deals from £26,995
Monthly finance from £405*

Step inside a Honda e and you could be forgiven for thinking you’ve stepped into the cockpit of a spaceship from a sci-fi movie. Above the dashboard are wall-to-wall information screens, and even the door mirrors aren’t door mirrors - they’re cameras. If the mood takes you, you can even plug a games console into the car and run it via the screens. Not while you're driving, of course...

That high-tech starship look and feel doesn't come especially cheap, mind you. The Honda e cost more than £28,000 brand new, and even the earliest examples are coming in at £405 per month for this stylish electric city car.

New electric cars are typically pricey to purchase, but there are big savings to make when it comes to charging costs compared with petrol or diesel - especially if you can do most of your charging at home. Now there's a luxury; not having to visit a petrol station or having to wait in enormous queues to fill up.

2. Peugeot 208

Best supermini interior

Used deals from £13,795
Monthly finance from £238*

Peugeot takes an unusual approach to its interiors, focusing on a cockpit-like feel with a driver-focused dashboard. Its cars also feature a smaller-than-normal steering wheel, with driver’s dials perched higher than you’d expect, so you look at them over the top of the wheel rather than through them.

Plush features include 3D-style digital graphics, piano black plastic finishes, and piano-key-style shortcut buttons. You can specify upmarket leather seats on some models, too, to really maximise the feeling of sporty, high-tech luxury. There's a range of efficient petrol and diesel engines, and like the Honda e above, you can have an electric version as well.

3. Mercedes A-Class

Best family car interior

Used deals from £20,480
Monthly finance from £253*

With two digital screens forming most of the dashboard - two giant information screens if you go for a car with one of the optional extra packs added - spectacular 64-colour customisable interior lighting, and a bank of striking turbine-style air vents, the interior of the Mercedes A-Class is extraordinary for a car of this type. It’s simply so different from any comparable car.

As you’d expect from Mercedes, too, the fit and finish and quality of materials are also impeccable. Never before did a family hatchback ever feel more like a genuinely upmarket product. Best of all, the A-Class has very slick voice controls, which make setting the sat-nav a doddle. You don't even need to take your hands off the wheel.

4. Skoda Superb Estate

Best large family car interior

Used deals from £16,000
Monthly finance from £275*

If luxury to you means plenty of rear-seat and boot space for both your family’s luggage and that of your next-door neighbour’s, then the Skoda Superb Estate has few rivals. You can fit a whopping 660 litres of stuff into the boot, or a total of 1,950 litres if you fold the rear seats down. Those numbers may not mean much to you, but trust us; the boot is huge.

That the Superb is a relaxing long-distance cruiser and features plenty of standard equipment in higher trim levels is just icing on the cake. All together that makes the Superb a comfy, spacious and easy-to-drive car that provides tonnes of luxuries for the price.

5. Renault Captur

Best small SUV interior

Used deals from £14,800
Monthly finance from £236*

Despite its compact dimensions and budget-conscious pricing, the Renault Captur feels like a much bigger, more expensive car in the way it’s put together, with high-quality soft-touch materials on most surfaces - something that you often don't get with cars of this price.

In terms of equipment, it’s equally grown-up, with adaptive cruise control standard even in basic models, and a great-looking large central touchscreen media system. As the Captur prioritises comfort over sportiness in the way it drives, this adds to the luxury feel.

6. Volvo XC60

Best family SUV interior

Used deals from £25,999
Monthly finance from £397*

An airy, relaxing feeling is the key to the Volvo XC60’s interior. This is especially true if you specify it with light-coloured leather upholstery and Scandinavian-style driftwood-effect trim highlights, although all sorts of trims and seat materials are available, so you should be able to find an XC60 that suits your tastes.

But however you specify your Volvo XC60, you’ll get a supremely comfortable, luxurious, and well-equipped cabin and a smooth ride, all waiting to soothe you even on the most stressful journeys.

7. Land Rover Defender

Best large SUV interior

Used deals from £67,999
Monthly finance from £1,022*

The original Land Rover Defender was an icon, as a rugged, utilitarian, go-anywhere machine. But it was hardly luxurious. Its successor, launched in 2020 changed all that, however, offering unique style and a tough but upmarket feel.

It’s still a car interior that you can literally hose clean if it gets muddy, but it also features all the latest technology and incredibly flexible seating positions, including a centre console that can double up as a middle front seat in some models.

Another luxury with the Defender is that you don't have to take a detour if you come across a flood - in most cases you should be able to drive straight through, while others have to go on long-winded detours. That's thanks to a wading depth of 900mm - something no ordinary car can beat. Check out the cars with best wading depths here.

8. BMW 3 Series

Best overall interior

Used deals from £27,595
Monthly finance from £375*

There’s not really a single star feature that you can identify with the BMW 3 Series that makes it so special. Instead, it’s a combination of so many things being ‘just right’ that it's hard to think of a more effective interior in a sporty saloon - it manages to be both comfortable but make the driver feel engaged in the process of driving - a BMW trademark.

Whether it’s the smart digital dials, the 'iDrive' media system that allows you to choose between touchscreen controls or using a rotary controller - something that's much easier than prodding at a screen while driving - or the precise high-quality feel of the interior fittings, the BMW 3 Series exudes a sense of quality, confidence, and usability that makes any journey in it a pleasure.
