The Nissan X-Trail, the larger of Nissan’s two mainstream SUVs, might not sell in such large numbers as the smaller Nissan Qashqai, but it’s still a popular large family SUV - and it’s popular for a reason, offering dependable family motoring and good value for money.

This version of the X-Trail, sold between 2014 and 2021, shares a lot in common with the Nissan Qashqai, including an all-but-identical dashboard. It’s well built and feels classy, with soft-touch materials and plenty of equipment on most trim levels, but it can feel a bit sombre inside in certain trim and colour combinations.

Available as a five-seater or seven-seater, it’s worth noting that seven-seat versions of the X-Trail aren't quite as spacious as rivals such as the Kia Sorento and Skoda Kodiaq, but as long as you slide the middle row of seats forward you should find enough legroom for shorter passengers in the rearmost seats. Since the extra two seats were a £1,000 option when new, it's worth being aware that many buyers didn't add these - in fact only around 40% of X-Trails were sold as seven-seaters.

Engine options include a variety of petrol and diesel choices, though the 163hp 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol was phased out in 2019 in favour of a more modern, smoother 160hp 1.3-litre 'DIG-T' engine. Diesel choices include a 130hp 1.6-litre dCi - the most common engine option - a 177hp 2.0-litre dCi diesel, and a 1.7-litre with 150hp for models sold from 2020 onwards.

If one of these X-Trails tickles your fancy, you can find affordable used models on BuyaCar from £10,395 or with Personal Contract Purchase (PCP finance) and Hire Purchase (HP) deals, with monthly payments from as little as £318 per month.

Keep reading to get to grips with the different trim levels available with the X-Trail and the standard equipment that comes with them.

Best Nissan X-Trail Visia deals

Even though Visia is the entry-level specification with the X-Trail, it still gets plenty of equipment. Included as standard are 17-inch alloy wheels, a digital radio, cruise control, electric windows front and rear, plus manual air-conditioning and heated mirrors.

Do be aware that all X-Trail Visia models are two-wheel-drive only, so if one of the reasons you want an SUV is to gain off-road ability, this is not the model for you. The X-Trail is a car that is engineered for driving on-road predominantly, so models such as the Land Rover Discovery Sport are a better choice if you're after a car that is particularly capable off-road.

Best Nissan X-Trail Acenta deals

Acenta is the next step up the X-Trail trim ladder and offers quite a few extra bits of kit over the Visia. With it, you get a panoramic sunroof, auto lights and wipers, an upgraded sound system, a leather steering wheel and parking sensors.

There is also the option of four-wheel-drive with Acenta models, so models where the original buyer added four-wheel-drive are available.

Best Nissan X-Trail Acenta Premium deals

The ‘premium’ part of the Acenta Premium doesn’t mean all that much, as it’s basically everything you get on the regular Acenta trim, with the addition of a few extra bits of equipment.

These are desirable additions, however, and include sat-nav and a 360-degree parking camera, so if these are important bits of kit for you, keep an eye out for Acenta Premium models.

Best Nissan X-Trail N-Connecta deals

X-Trail 4WD

N-Connecta trim level cars were the replacement for N-Tec and N-Vision models. These brought bigger 18-inch alloy wheels, helping to beef up the car’s looks a little, roof rails, keyless go and a powered tailgate.

If you're looking at models sold after the 2017 update, the electric boot opening function will have hands-free operation, too, which makes it more useful.
