Which used Audi TT Roadster should you buy?
The Audi TT Roadster is a thoroughly desirable drop-top, and there are plenty of models to choose from.
Most versions left the showroom with a 2.0-litre TFSI petrol engine. The 40 TFSI engine offers decent performance if you’re more interested in cruising, but the more powerful 45 TFSI is preferable if you fancy getting the best out of a B-road. The latter is also available with four-wheel drive for added all-weather reassurance.
The sportier Audi TTS Roadster gets an even more powerful version of the 2.0-litre petrol engine, while the hardcore Audi TT RS Roadster draws power from a fantastic 2.5-litre five-cylinder engine. The extra horsepower and superb warbling soundtrack add an extra layer of enjoyment.
All newer versions feature a seven-gear S-tronic automatic gearbox, although a manual gearbox was available in the past, as was a diesel-engined version. The 2.0-litre diesel offers excellent fuel economy and great overtaking ability, but you might not welcome the slightly gruff sound of the engine with the top down.

As you would expect for such a popular and desirable car, there’s a number of different versions, stretching from the Audi TT Roadster Sport to the truly muscular, and lavishly equipped, Audi TT RS Roadster Vorsprung.
Audi TT Roadster Sport
The Audi TT Roadster Sport is the entry-level model, and there are many reasons why you might be tempted to stick with it. You get a high level of finish throughout, stunning good looks and a similar top-down experience as with the more expensive models. Specification highlights include:
- 18-inch alloy wheels
- Xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights
- 12.3-inch digital instrument panel
- Heated seats
- Retractable rear spoiler
- Cruise control
- Rear parking sensors
- Smartphone connectivity
- Air-conditioning
- Sports seats
- Leather multifunction steering wheel
Audi TT Roadster Sport Edition
Upgrading to the Audi TT Roadster Sport Edition added around £1,000 to the price when new, but there’s a real sense that you’re getting more for your money. Some attractive cosmetic additions make it look even bolder.
- 19-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels
- Black styling pack
Audi TT Roadster S line
S line is one of the most popular trim levels, which means that finding a great value used Audi TT Roadster S line should be easy. This version feels better to drive on a twisty road, but it comes at the expense of ride quality, which is firmer than on lesser models. Fortunately, you can select from different driving modes. Key equipment includes:
- LED headlights
- LED rear lights
- Scrolling dynamic rear indicators
- S line exterior styling details
- 19-inch alloy wheels
- Lowered suspension (by 10mm)
- Sports seats with S line branding
Audi TT Roadster Black Edition
The Audi TT Roadster Black Edition cost a little over £39,000 when launched, but it certainly stands out from the crowd with its distinctive design. Everything that is standard on the Audi TT Roadster S line is included, plus some additional appealing features.
- Black styling pack
- 20-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels
Audi TT Roadster Vorsprung
Short of upgrading to the high-performance Audi TTS Roadster or Audi TT RS Roadster models, the Vorsprung is the Audi TT Roadster at its most lavish. It comes with lots of standard kit that was optional on the other Audi TT Roadster models. This includes:
- Self-dimming Matrix LED headlights
- LED rear lights
- Scrolling dynamic front and rear indicators
- Sat-nav
- Park assist
- Rear view camera
- 36-month subscription to Audi Connect entertainment and information services
- S line sports seats
- Deluxe air-conditioning
Audi TTS Roadster
The high-performance Audi TTS Roadster is a model in its own right, which had a price tag knocking on the door of £50,000 when new. In addition to a more powerful 2.0-litre TFSI petrol engine and four-wheel drive, the Audi TTS Roadster came with a whole host of desirable features and equipment.
- LED headlights
- 19-inch alloy wheels
- Sporty TTS styling
- 12.3-inch digital instrument panel with sat-nav
- Audi Connect
- Rear parking sensors
- Deluxe air-conditioning
- Cruise control
- Super Sports premium leather seats with four-way lumbar support
- TTS steering wheel
- Magnetic Ride active suspension
Audi TT RS Roadster
The Audi TT RS Roadster is the sportiest version of this desirable soft-top. The 2.5-litre petrol engine, which makes a distinctive warbling sound, is accompanied by four-wheel drive and all the upgrades that feature on the standard Audi TTS Roadster, while the Audi TT RS Sport Edition adds more. For the ultimate indulgence, there is the Audi TT RS Roadster in Vorsprung trim.
- Four-wheel drive
- Sports suspension
- RS styling upgrades
- TT RS steering wheel
- 20-inch alloy wheels (Sport Edition)
- Black styling pack (Sport Edition)
- Privacy glass (Sport Edition)
- High-beam assist (Sport Edition)
Is a used Audi TT Roadster a good buy?
The Audi TT Roadster is a stylish and well-engineered alternative to soft-top cars like the Porsche 718 Boxster, and another German contender, the BMW Z4.
As the name suggests, the Audi TT Roadster is the soft-top version of the Audi TT Coupe. This means you get all of the benefits of the Audi TT Coupe – superb engines, a classy interior and a strong image – with the added excitement of wind-in-the-hair motoring.
The major difference is that the Audi TT Roadster is a strict two-seater, unlike the coupe, which has two small rear seats.
The fabric roof opens or closes electronically in just 10 seconds at speeds of up to 31mph, so there is no need to worry if you get caught in a downpour. You also get 280 litres of boot space, regardless of whether the roof is up or down, so it’s ideal if you fancy a night away.
