Is a used Volvo XC40 a good buy?
If you want an upmarket small SUV, you have plenty of choice from brands like BMW and Audi. But if you prefer something with with some understated cool about it, then a Volvo XC40 is a great choice.
As with its larger SUV models, Volvo has made the Volvo XC40 a safe and sophisticated machine, mixing an understated Scandinavian design with cutting-edge safety tech and top-notch build quality.
The Volvo XC40 also offers a comfortable and relaxing driving experience - another trait common to all modern Volvos. What is new with the Volvo XC40 is that it’s designed to appeal to younger drivers, so is less conservatively styled than other Volvos - options such as contrasting roof colours or bold-but-effective orange ‘lava’ carpeting really help to make it stand out.
Inside, the nine-inch portrait-aspect touchscreen media system and smart-looking metal and wood veneer trim finishes make the Volvo XC40 feel a cut above mainstream SUVs.
As a used car, the Volvo XC40 is a tempting prospect .They also hold onto their value extremely well, meaning PCP finance monthly payments are low compared with the value of the car.

Which used Volvo XC40 should you buy?
Engine choices include a range of turbocharged petrol and diesels, plus a pair of plug-in hybrids and even an electric version, though this last choice is rather pricey when new. Diesel models were discontinued in 2020, and mild hybrid versions of the T4 and T5 petrol were introduced - badged as B4 and B5.
What used Volvo XC40 trim levels are available?
Momentum cars (and all others in the range) get clever safety tech such as automatic emergency braking and assisted steering that can guide you in your lane on a motorway or dual carriageway. It’s a shame, though, that smartphone mirroring for Android Auto or Apple CarPlay is only an optional extra.
Volvo XC40 Momentum
The entry-level trim for the Volvo XC40 is the Momentum model, but it’s not exactly what you’d call poorly equipped: 18-inch alloys are standard fit, as is dual-zone climate control, integrated sat-nav and a customisable digital screen in front of the driver that replaces traditional instruments.
But, if you do want a few extra toys, it’s worth seeking out Momentum Pro models, which gain heated front seats, an electrically adjustable driver’s seat, and a heated windscreen.
Volvo XC40 R Design
R-Design models beef up the Volvo XC40’s looks with a contrasting black roof, high-gloss black bumper and grille, plus dual exhaust pipes. Inside, sporty touches include a perforated leather steering wheel and leather-wrapped gear lever.
As with the XC40 Momentum, the R-Design also has a ‘Pro’ version, which adds the same extras as the Momentum Pro, plus smart 20-inch alloy wheels and electric adjustment for the front passenger seat.
Volvo XC40 Inscription
Where the R-Design is supposed to be sporty, the Inscription is intended to be more luxurious. As a result, you get a full leather interior, wooden veneer inlays and a crystal gear lever on cars with an automatic gearbox. Also included on Inscription models are front parking sensors and an electrically operated tailgate. ‘Pro’ versions get the same extras as R-Design Pro models, mentioned above.
Volvo XC40 Recharge
The electric version of the Volvo XC40 - called the Recharge P8 - offers an awful lot of power and a long range, but it comes at a price. And that price, when new, is almost as much as larger electric SUVs such as the Jaguar I-Pace and Audi e-tron. Going used, however, can help to reduce this cost dramatically. Furthermore, if you want an electric XC40, you do benefit from an enormous amount of power - 408hp, to be precise - which gives you rapid acceleration, plus a range of almost 300 miles.
