Mercedes has revealed its new EQV - an electric eight-seater. And the new electric car from Mercedes, only the third production model in the company’s history, may not be what most drivers were expecting after the first, the EQC, an electric SUV and the B250e, a plug-in hatchback.

The EQV is a van-based people carrier that is capable of seating up to eight people. It uses some of the same technology as the EQC, the electric SUV that competes with the Audi e-tron, Jaguar I-Pace and forthcoming BMW iX3.

It is aimed at families with lots of children, or taxi drivers who want an electric people carrier that is exempt from congestion and emissions charge zones which are starting to be introduced in cities aross the country.

Set to go on sale in the UK next year, the EQV is anticipated to cost in the region of £60,000 – at least £10,000 more than a diesel-powered equivalent. So what makes a van-based electric vehicle like this so costly? And how far can it travel on a full charge of the battery? Read on to find out.

 

Mercedes EQV economy and performance

The EQV is one of the largest zero-emission passenger cars around, as Mercedes will only sell the long-wheelbase version in the UK.

Like any electric car, it produces zero tailpipe emissions, though your real impact on the environment depends how the electricity required to charge it is sourced. But let’s not get picky; this is one of the most practical and accommodating cars on the road and it emits zero local emissions.

That means it is exempt from the London Congestion Charge (£11.50 per day when in force during week days) and Ultra Low Emissions charge (in operation 24/7). It achieves this thanks to the use of a 90kWh battery, a higher capacity version of the 80kWh unit featured in the EQC.

Power is sent through a fixed-gear transmission to a front-mounted electric motor producing 204hp and 362Nm – sufficient to propel the EV to a 99mph top speed. As with most electric cars, however, the instant power on tap means the EQV is likely to accelerate surprisingly briskly.

Mercedes EQV 2020 range and charging times

According to official driving range data, the new EQV is capable of travelling for 252 miles on a single charge of the battery. However, load it up with a full complement of passengers and luggage and the range is likely to reduce noticeably.

An E+ mode helps drivers eke out as much driving range as possible. Also helping is energy regeneration while slowing, the strength of which can be altered using paddles behind the steering wheel. With the energy regeneration on its highest setting, the electric motors can effectively operate as the brakes, so that the car can be driven using only the accelerator pedal. Lift off the throttle and this increases the amount of energy recuperated, slowing the vehicle.

The EQV will be able to receive a maximum charge speed of 110kW, and such units are slowly being introduced in the UK and abroad. Using such a high-powered charger would see the battery go from 10% to 80% charge in 45 minutes, according to Mercedes. The UK’s more common 50kW charge is likely to take more than twice as long, although Mercedes has not confirmed charging times. Using an 11kW wallbox to boost the EQV’s battery pack takes just under 10 hours.

If you are considering fitting a wallbox, a grant toward the cost is available, worth up to £500, via the Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV).

Despite its van roots, the interior has a distinctly upmarket air that is befitting of a modern Mercedes. There's a touchscreen media system, gloss-surface detailing and good quality materials.

We will only have the option of the long-wheelbase version of the EQV in the UK, which features seating for up to eight people depending on how the car is specified, using two three-seat benches in the back. Six and seven-seat packages are also available with a degree of versatility thanks to individual seats making it is possible to have the four back seats facing one another. Even the two front seats can be swivelled to face various directions.

Every version of the EQV will come with a 10-inch media display, through which the driver can adjust the climate control, make phone calls using voice commands and use connected apps that provide features including real-time weather reports.

The same display can show the live energy flow of the electric powertrain and information about how efficiently the vehicle is being driven. And before you even take to the road, it supports adjustment of the cabin temperature and navigation destination inputs via a ‘Mercedes me’ smartphone app.

The EQV's navigation system is said to be able to plan routes based around the distance, remaining charge in the battery and available charging points, when the final location exceeds the battery range.

Much of these day-to-day systems will be operated using the company’s MBUX technology, which uses artificial intelligence to improve voice recognition and respond faithfully to a driver’s commands.

Mercedes EQV dimensions

The EQV is not small; it measures in at 5.37m long, in long wheelbase spec. Because the 90kWh battery is installed under the floor, Mercedes says the EQV’s 1,030-litre load area is the same size as the long wheelbase diesel V-Class. And don’t forget, the rear seats can all be folded down or removed entirely, giving it true van-like space.

Mercedes EQV 2020 warranty

The car gets a three-year warranty, like any other Mercedes. However, in addition, the German company provides the EQV’s battery pack with eight years or 60,000 miles of cover. Mercedes will replace or refurbish the 90kWh lithium-ion batteries if they fall to below 70% of their as-new performance within that time.
