You know what you’re getting with a Volkswagen Golf: solid build quality, straightforward design and a smooth, quiet ride.

It’s a formula that’s enabled Volkswagen to sell more than 25 million Golfs since 1974, and the car remains a top ten bestseller in this country.

But the car’s success is also down to the excellent deals available, which reduce the price by almost 20% in some cases. Most of these discounts include incentives that are only available if you take out finance.

VW Golf finance payments are usually competitive because the Golf also tends to hold its value better than other family hatchbacks, helping to keep monthly payments low.

The range of specifications and bodystyles (there are three- and five-door Golfs, as well as an estate and taller SV version) mean that most buyers will find a Golf that’s right for them.

Scroll down for the best new car deals; read the VW Golf buying guide for more about the car; or look at the used VW Golf deals available. Note that the pictures below might include some optional extras.

Volkswagen Golf 1.0 TSI S 3dr

Best new VW Golf deal for low budgets

• Save £3,245
• BuyaCar price £15,090

• 8in touchscreen • Air conditioning • Automatic emergency braking • Finance from 4.9%

New Volkswagen Golf S deals

Considering that this is a brand new Volkswagen Golf, a price of little over £15,000 is extremely cheap, particularly when spread over a finance agreement, with interest rates starting at 4.9%.

Although it does come with steel, rather than alloy wheels, this budget version of the Golf doesn’t feel cheap thanks to an 8in dashboard touchscreen with Bluetooth for wirelessly connecting your phone; digital radio; air conditioning; a cooled glovebox; and automatic emergency braking. The cheapest model only has three-doors but the more-practical five-door car costs around £400 more,

However, thanks to larger discounts on higher-specification cars you can upgrade to some of the models below for just a few pounds per month. These models include features such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for easier use of your phone (including navigation apps); parking sensors and more powerful engines.

Volkswagen Golf 1.0 TSI 110 SE

Best new VW Golf deal for value

• Save £3,477
• BuyaCar price £16,793

In addition to S specification: • Front & rear parking sensors •Apple CarPlay / Android Auto

New Volkswagen Golf SE deals

A 17% saving on the list price of this Golf makes it the best-value version that you can buy. The extra power from its 110hp petrol engine, compared with the entry-level model above, actually makes it more efficient in real-world driving because you don’t need to press the accelerator as hard.

It’s also got considerably more equipment than basic S models, including alloy wheels; front and rear parking sensors; and adaptive cruise control, which adjusts the car’s speed to maintain a safe distance from the car in front. Apple Carplay and Android Auto are included too, so there’s no need to worry about the lack of sat-nav: plug in your phone and several apps, including navigation ones, can be displayed clearly on the 8in touchscreen.

Volkswagen Golf 1.5 TSI Evo SE Nav DSG

Best new VW Golf deal for families

• Save £3,895
• BuyaCar price £19,860

In addition to SE specification: •Sat-nav •Online traffic and fuel pricing

New Volkswagen Golf SE Nav deals

This is the ultimate version of the Golf hatchback for families, thanks to the mid-range SE Nav specification, which includes sat-nav, so it doesn’t matter whose phone is paired with the car - you’ll still get route guidance. The navigation software also includes a generally accurate speed limit display, to remind you of how fast you can travel, as well as fuel price and traffic information that’s displayed on the map.

The 1.5-litre petrol engine brings more power than the range of 1-litre options, enabling this Golf to get a move on no matter how much luggage you’re carrying, and you can also have the car with a smooth and efficient automatic gearbox (known as DSG) for less than £20,000 thanks to current discounts.

In this specification, the car is able to tow a trailer of up to 660kg, but it’s also worth looking at the larger Golf SV or Golf Estate for more boot space.

Volkswagen Golf 1.6 TDI SE

Best new VW Golf deal for fuel economy

• Save £3,671
• BuyaCar price £18,214*

New Volkswagen Golf SE deals

A 17% saving on this diesel Volkswagen Golf in SE specification, should make this version of the Golf one of the cheapest to run, thanks to low finance payments and cheaper fuel costs.

Ignore the official fuel economy figures because you can expect around 53mpg in real-world driving, giving you almost 600 miles of driving per tank of fuel, and this doesn’t come at the expense of performance: acceleration is steady, if a little noisy, and the car will roll along smoothly at 70mph on the motorway.

There’s more power and slightly better real-world fuel economy (by around 1mpg) from the larger 2-litre diesel engine, but the added cost means that it’s hard to justify.

Volkswagen Golf GTI Performance

Best new VW Golf deal for performance

• Save £4,707
• BuyaCar price £25,873

In addition to SE Nav: • Sporty front bumpers and alloy wheels •Tartan seats • digital instrument display

New Volkswagen Golf GTI deals

You could buy the fastest, most powerful version of Volkswagen’s hatchback, the Golf R, but most drivers will be just as happy with the entertaining Golf GTI for less money, which provides all the acceleration and grip that you need on public roads.

The GTI Performance model brings a little extra power, bigger brakes, and more grip than the standard GTI for an extra £1,300, taking the discounted price of the five-door GTI to £25,873, which is around £3,000 cheaper than the Golf R.

Acceleration is brisk and cornering crisp, the Golf GTI nimbly changing direction in quick response to your steering. It’s relatively comfortable too, so it can still be used for the school run.

Volkswagen Golf Estate SE Nav 1.5 TSI Evo

Best new VW Golf deal for luggage space

• Save £3,847
• BuyaCar price £19,528

New Volkswagen Golf Estate deals

The 605-litre boot in this VW Golf Estate is 225l larger than the standard hatchback, making this version of the car more useful for carrying flat-pack furniture, trips to the tip or long holidays. There’s no boot lip to lift heavy items over, and the back seats fold down level with the floor (but not flat), so you can slide luggage into the back.

It’s available with the powerful 1.5-litre petrol engine for under £20,000, thanks to a 16% discount, including a finance incentive. The SE Nav specification includes parking sensors at the front and back; sat-nav and adaptive cruise control, which adjusts speed to maintain a safe distance from the car ahead.
