2021 Volkswagen ID.4 SUV: performance, range and charging times

Volkswagen has recently started selling its all-electric ID.3 hatchback in the UK, and now it’s gearing up to launch its next tailpipe-emission-free model: the ID.4 SUV.

As its name suggests, the ID.4 isn’t too distantly related to the ID.3. Both cars have fairly similar mechanical bits under the skin, right down to the 204hp electric motor and the 77kWh battery packs that the pair share.

They’re pretty close when it comes to their range on a charge, too: the ID.4’s claimed figure of 323 miles is only 17 miles down on what the hatchback can manage on paper. Both are pretty high ranges for 2020 electric cars and should be more than sufficient for most drivers in terms of how far they are ever likely to need to travel in one go.

Not everything about the two is identical, though. Whereas the Volkswagen ID.3 is about the same size as the Golf hatchback, the ID.4 is more in line with the larger Tiguan SUV - meaning, in theory, it should have more interior space than the hatchback. That definitely manifests itself in luggage volume, as the ID.4’s maximum capacity of up to 1,575 litres is on par with other petrol or diesel-powered family SUVs of this size.

If that sounds like the ideal car for you, you’ll need to wait a little bit longer before you pick up the keys for one. At the time of writing, the Volkswagen ID.4 isn’t even available for early adopters to pre-order, and the first deliveries aren’t expected to begin until early 2021.

2021 Volkswagen ID.4 range and charging times

Initially at least, the ID.4 will only be available with a 77kWh battery pack, which Volkswagen says will allow a maximum electric-only range of up to 323 miles. Not only is that range pretty good for an electric car of this size, but it also means the Volkswagen should be capable of comfortably covering long distances between charges/

As with all electric cars, the exact distance you can travel on a charge will depend on how fast you go and other factors such as temperature (which affects the efficiency of the battery) and how many of the car's electricity-draining functions - like headlights and heated seats - you use.

Because the ID.4 is compatible with very powerful ultra-rapid chargers, it shouldn’t take too long to recharge the car if you plug it into one of these. According to Volkswagen, it can take as little as 30 minutes to put up to 198 miles worth of range back into the batteries using a 125kW charging point.

Charging speeds for less powerful points haven’t been confirmed by Volkswagen yet. However, using the Skoda Enyaq iV (which is closely related to the Volkswagen under the skin) as a reference, it will likely take around eight hours to fully recharge the ID.4’s batteries using a 7kW public charging point or a similarly potent wall box you can have installed at home.

2021 Volkswagen ID.4 performance

For the time being, the Volkswagen ID.4 will only be offered with one power option: an electric motor with 204hp and 310Nm of torque, which drives the rear wheels. While that isn’t a huge amount of power, it does mean the ID.4 has the sort of oomph you’d expect to find in more powerful versions of the similarly-sized Volkswagen Tiguan.

Likewise, while the acceleration offered here isn't exactly rapid, the ID.4 has more than enough speed for a car of this type. Volkswagen claims the car can accelerate from 0-62mph in 8.5 seconds, meaning it should feel relatively nippy around town, and the 99mph top speed is more than plenty for the public road.

If cars like the Volkswagen ID.3 hatchback and the previously mentioned Skoda Enyaq are anything to go by, there will likely be more and less powerful versions of the ID.4 later down the line. However, don’t expect them to join the range until early 2021 at the earliest.

2021 Volkswagen ID.4 specs and dimensions

The Volkswagen ID.4 will initially only be available in a limited-run ‘1st Edition’ spec. Full specs will be revealed closer to launch, though Volkswagen has confirmed the ID.4 1st Edition will come as standard with 20-inch alloy wheels, a reversing camera, a large 12-inch touchscreen media system, a panoramic sunroof and a head-up display unit that can project sat-nav instructions and other info onto the windscreen.

While items like the 20-inch alloys and head-up display unit will likely be optional extras on the regular ID.4, all versions should be identical when it comes to practicality. There’s 543 litres of luggage space with the rear seats in place, which is fairly good for a car of this size, and this can be increased to 1,575 litres by folding the rear seats down.

As the ID.4 is longer and about as tall as the Tiguan, that should mean that this all-electric Volkswagen will have a similar amount of space inside for passengers - that means plenty of space in both rows of seats for all but the tallest people.

2021 Volkswagen ID.4 price and release date

Prices for the Volkswagen ID.4 haven’t been announced yet, though it’s likely the initial 1st Edition launch cars will set buyers back around £45,000 once the government Plug-In Car Grant discount is applied. Expect the regular ID.4 to start closer to £40,00- when that goes on sale.

There’s no official word yet on then the ID.4 will go on sale in the UK, either. It’s possible Volkswagen could start accepting orders before the end 2020, with order books fully opening and deliveries likely to follow shortly afterwards in early 2021.
