2020 Citroen C4 unveiled: electric e-C4, petrol and diesel C4s available

Citroen unveils its comfort-oriented C4 hatchback - and electric e-C4 - which go up against the Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra

Citroen has unveiled the latest version of its C4 hatchback, which is set to launch in the second half of 2020 and be available in electric form for the first time. The previous Citroen C4 is super-affordable as a used medium hatchback, but was less appealing as a new car against value-centric models such as the Vauxhall Astra and Ford Focus and more upmarket cars like the VW Golf and BMW 1 Series.

The new model, however, is set to be more desirable, with a focus on style and comfort - something which sets it apart from the latest versions of hatchbacks including the Ford Focus and BMW 1 Series, which prioritise a sporty feel over absolute comfort.

Something else that will set the 2020 Citroen C4 apart is being able to choose an electric e-C4 model, which should build on the standard car's focus on comfort with strong refinement levels since it does without a conventional petrol or diesel engine under the bonnet. 

While some new cars are being launched with solely electric power, the C4 will be available in electric, petrol and diesel form. Expect the petrol version to come with the lowest purchase prices and cost the least overall for those who cover low annual mileages. Meanwhile the electric version offers the prospect of zero-emission driving and lower running costs - although it's likely to cost more than petrol C4 equivalent to begin with.

On the other hand, the diesel should make the most sense for those who cover high mileages and do many long journeys, as diesel models typically offer much stronger fuel economy than petrol equivalents and they can cover long distances per tank of diesel, with no need to stop and charge, as with the electric model.

2020 Citroen C4 comfort

While many hatchbacks are designed to look fast on the outside and feel sporty from behind the wheel - whether they actually have a powerful engine under the bonnet or not - Citroen is doing the opposite with the C4. This is a car that focuses heavily on comfort for drivers who feel no need to pretend to be a racing driver with a flat-bottomed steering wheel or pops and bangs from the exhaust - something which many other hatchbacks offer.

Citroen is presenting the electric e-C4 as taking this emphasis on comfort even further, since the electric motor makes very little noise in use. Should those claims turn out to be true, the e-C4 could feel like something of a mini-limo inside.

The interior itself is described as being warm in style and set up to promote wellbeing, thanks to seats that are designed to maximise driving comfort and suspension engineered to cushion driver and passengers from the road surface as much as possible.

2020 Citroen e-C4 electric model

Citroen is yet to release any details about how far the e-C4 can travel per charge, how long it will take to top up or how fast it is. We'd imagine that it will need to offer a range of around 200 miles per charge or more to prove competitive against other medium-sized electric cars such as the Nissan Leaf and outgoing VW e-Golf.

Those aren't the only rivals for the e-C4, however, thanks to its slightly raised driving position. That means that the e-C4 also takes on electric SUVs, such as the Kia e-Niro, though that offers a claimed range of up to 282 miles and a seven-year warranty. Citroen will have to offer a similar range - or at least an e-C4 version with a claimed range of nearly 300 miles if it wants to win over potential e-Niro drivers.
