For many drivers, cruise control is the equivalent of kicking off your shoes at the end of the day and slipping into something more comfortable. It is one of the more helpful systems that take the strain out of driving.

Yet, you might be surprised to know that you don't have to aim for the most expensive cars around in order to get such a luxurious feature. In fact, cruise control has been around for decades now, so it's actually a very common addition on all kinds of models from the smallest city cars to the largest and most luxurious SUVs.

The basic idea of cruise control is that it enables you to flick a switch and the car will maintain its own speed without your input on the throttle pedal. This makes it an extremely popular feature for drivers who spend hours cruising along the motorway. More modern technology makes use of sensors to moderate your speed according to the car in front of you, so if you come across a slow moving vehicle, the computer will slow down to match that speed. This isn't a magic system that'll drive the car for you though, so you'll still need to concentrate on steering and braking as and when you need to.

If cruise control is something you've decided you need, then you're in the right place to begin your search for the perfect used car. There are 28525 car currently available on BuyaCar with cruise control, with prices starting from just £4,499 or £83 per month.

Best cheap used cars with cruise control

1. Audi A1

Best upmarket small car with cruise control

Used deals from £7,348
Monthly finance from £149*

This is the last generation Audi A1, which has been on sale since the end of 2010, and as a result there is no shortage of used models available. Thanks to the combination of Audi’s image and reputation for making cars with plush-feeling interiors the A1 quickly caught on, with many drivers trading up from everyday cars like the Ford Fiesta or downsizing from larger models such as the Audi A4.

Finding a relatively young model on BuyaCar that is fitted with cruise control is a doddle. There are plenty, and you’ll have a choice of petrol or diesel engines. Your best best will be to look out for Sport models, as these were available with cruise control as standard when they were new.

2. DS 3

Best stylish small car with cruise control

Latest DS 3 deals from £5,495
Monthly finance from £104*

Looking for style on a budget? Look no further. The strike-a-pose DS 3 is the car that put the DS brand on the map. So much so, parent company Citroen decided to separate its DS models into a separate company.

The 3 has head-turning looks, with a style that is modern without resorting to the retro touches that come with the Mini, its main competitor. DS 3s are available from around £7,000, for a 2016 model with cruise control, although you could pay as little as £6,000 for the Citroen DS3 model that came before it. It offers better value for money than a Mini, but the interior isn't as well built or clearly laid out. Still, you can forgive it that when it looks so fresh.

3. Ford Focus

Best small family car with cruise control

Used deals from £5,799
Monthly finance from £124*

There is no end of competent family hatchbacks, with the highlight being the best of the bunch - the Volkswagen Golf. But you’ll pay a lot more for a Golf than you will for a comparable Ford Focus. This means you can get a better-equipped Focus with a more powerful engine for your money compared with the VW alternative.

For around £8,000 you can afford the generation of Focus that has just been replaced, which despite no longer being the newest model, is still an impressive car. Both petrol and diesel engines are available with cruise control at that price, and a particular highlight are the 1.0-litre, turbocharged EcoBoost versions, which sound characterful and offer surprisingly strong acceleration.

4. Hyundai i10

Best budget city car with cruise control

Used deals from £4,495
Monthly finance from £89*
City cars are typically the smallest and cheapest cars you can buy, but still fulfil many drivers' requirements – which is exactly what makes the i10 so good. It manages to be to be affordable to buy and run, has enough equipment to feel comfortable and connected and, surprisingly, it is just as confident driving on motorways as it is on busy city streets.

With prices for post-2014 generation i10s from under £5,000 for models with cruise control, this is a good starting point for drivers needing a cost-effective runaround. Spend just a little more and you can get a model with plenty of other desirable kit for a still low cost - especially if you consider PCP finance. What with the introduction of the all-new Hyundai i10 arriving in 2020, you can expect this outgoing model to become even cheaper as a used car.

5. Kia Sportage

Best affordable SUV with cruise control

Used deals from £7,495
Monthly finance from £154*

Often used as family cars, SUVs tend to be driven by parents who have plenty on their mind and could do with a helping hand from systems such as cruise control. The previous shape Kia Sportage is available with cruise for less than £10,000 and can comfortably cope with everything a young family can throw at it.

Go for a used version of the current model, however, and it’s a great alternative to a used Nissan Qashqai. As new models came with a seven-year warranty, even the 2016 used examples in this price range are covered until 2023. There’s a 1.6-litre petrol engine available, but our vote would go to the 1.7-litre diesel, for the best blend of fuel economy and pulling power.

6. Mazda 2

Best value supermini with cruise control

Used deals from £6,690
Monthly finance from £128*

Competing with the Ford Fiesta, the Mazda 2 has something in common with its rival: it’s cracking to drive. When you aren’t clocking up the miles on main roads with the cruise control set to your desired speed, it comes alive. The 2 responds to a driver’s commands faithfully, with super steering, responsive suspension and a precision to the way it goes through twists and turns that will have you wondering why more cars can’t be like this.

For around £7,000 there is a good selection of used models that feature a 1.5-litre petrol engine. Look for Sport Nav specification models if you’d like to have sat-nav fitted and as a bonus, you'll get plenty of other standard equipment for your money, too.

7. Nissan Qashqai

Best stylish SUV with cruise control

Used deals from £6,945
Monthly finance from £136*

The Nissan Qashqai isn’t Britain’s most popular SUV for nothing. It offers a good – if not class-leading – blend of attributes that make busy mums and dads feel at home and can comfortably cope with children, pets, luggage and so on.

It’s a hard-working family car, which would be even better if there was more boot space and just a little more pizzazz to the way it drove. Then again, it cruises quietly and the ride comfort is smooth to the point that you could almost forget that our roads are falling to pieces.

Combine those qualities with cruise control and you have the ideal car for hitting the open road. You’ll find 2016 models available for less than £10,000 on BuyaCar. With so many used models to choose from, though, you can find high-specification models for just a little more, if your budget stretches.

8. Volkswagen Passat Estate

Best practical estate with cruise control

Used deals from £9,599
Monthly finance from £159*

When it comes to carrying cargo, it’s hard to beat an estate car. The best ones have large, square boots, a low bumper and floor to make loading easy and seats that can be folded from a remote switch in the boot, saving you from walking round and opening a back door to drop them.

In the Passat, Volkswagen has long mastered all this and more. It is a large, capacious car that offers good value for money. For example, a 2.0-litre TDI diesel model from 2015 is little more than £10,000. With comfortable seats, good levels of equipment and impressive refinement at speed, the miles will quickly pass by when the cruise control is switched on.
