Which used Volkswagen T-Roc should you buy?
Despite the sporty looks, it’s worth bearing in mind that the Volkswagen T-Roc is actually a very comfortable car – whatever specification you go for – with supportive seats and soft suspension that makes for a relaxing ride.
The Volkswagen T-Roc range has been around since 2018, but the high-performance Volkswagen T-Roc R version only joined the line-up in 2019 and the unusual-looking Volkswagen T-Roc Cabriolet has only been around since 2020.
Four-wheel drive is available, but only on the more powerful petrol and diesel engines. The rest of the Volkswagen T-Roc range is two-wheel drive.
Gearbox choices include a six-speed manual and a seven-speed ‘DSG’ automatic – although again, the automatic is only available with the more powerful engines.

What used Volkswagen T-Roc trim levels are available?
The Vokswagen T-Roc range echoes other VW model ranges with S, SE and SEL the core versions that you’ll see for sale. The mid-spec SE is the most popular and offers useful extra kit over the S, such as parking sensors and automatic climate control.
Volkswagen T-Roc S
The entry-level Volkswagen T-Roc S is only available with the 1.0-litre 112PS petrol engine and the 117PS 2.0-litre diesel engine, so you don’t have much in the way of choice here, but it’s nevertheless reasonably well equipped. Key highlights include:
- 16-inch alloy wheels
- Climate control
- Lane assist
- Automatic emergency braking
Volkswagen T-Roc SE
Moving up a trim level to the Volkswagen T-Roc SE brings a number of upgrades. SE has traditionally been a popular trim level, so there should be a wide range of used models on offer.
- 17-inch alloy wheels
- Front and rear parking sensors
- Power-folding door mirrors
- Body-coloured bumpers
- Chrome grille
- Height-adjustable front seats
- Automatic climate control
- Adaptive cruise control
Volkswagen T-Roc United
Volkswagen T-Roc United models are fairly similar to the Volkswagen T-Roc SE cars. Differences include:
- Different style of alloy wheels
- Daytime running lights
- Heated front seats
Volkswagen T-Roc Black Edition
Volkswagen T-Roc Black Edition models add a touch of moodiness with some black styling add-ons.
- Black 18-inch alloy wheels
- Black Edition styling pack
- Black roof rails
- Tinted windows
Volkswagen T-Roc Design
Volkswagen T-Roc Design specification brings a wide range of customisation options, so used models in this trim offer a lot more visual variety. Among the best features offered are:
- Twin trapezoidal exhaust trims
- Contrast colour for roof
- Contrast colour for door mirrors
- Interior ambient lighting
Volkswagen T-Roc SEL
Specified from new, the Volkswagen T-Roc SEL cost several thousand pounds more than a Volkswagen T-Roc Design model. On the used market, the differences in price are much more narrow.
- LED headlights
- Front sport seats
- Driver fatigue detection system
- Digital screen
Volkswagen T-Roc R Line
The Volkswagen T-Roc R-Line models are where the car starts to get more sporty. Sports suspension gives these models a notably firmer ride.
- 19-inch alloy wheels
- Sports suspension
- Automatic range adjustment on the LED headlights
- Heated front sports seats
Volkswagen T-Roc R
The Volkswagen T-Roc R is the performance-focused model in the range. It uses the same 2.0-litre turbocharged engine as the speedy Volkswagen Golf R.
While the Volkswagen T-Roc R is significantly faster than the other models, it is a little less comfortable and a lot more expensive, so it’s only worth considering if you really crave the extra power it offers.
- Four-wheel drive
- Seven-speed automatic gearbox
Is a used Volkswagen T-Roc a good buy?
The sporty looking Volkswagen T-Roc is one of the best small SUVs around. It’s about the same size as a Volkswagen Golf, albeit higher-riding of course, while other rivals include the similar SEAT Arona and the popular Ford Puma.
More expensive versions compete with similar upmarket small SUVs such as the Audi Q2 and MINI Countryman.
Whatever version you’re considering, the Volkswagen T-Roc is a comfortable, flexible, and spacious companion.
