Which used Volvo XC40 should you buy?
The Volvo XC40 offers a comfortable and relaxing driving experience, and is designed to appeal to younger drivers, so is less conservatively styled than other models from the brand. Options such as contrasting roof colours or orange ‘lava’ carpeting really help to make it stand out.
Inside, the nine-inch portrait-aspect touchscreen media system and smart-looking metal and wood veneer trim finishes create a sophisticated environment.
Engine choices include a range of turbocharged petrols and diesels, plus a pair of plug-in hybrids and even an electric version, although this is rather pricey when new.
Diesel models were discontinued in 2020, and mild hybrid versions of the T4 and T5 petrol were introduced, badged as B4 and B5. Whichever model you prefer, the Volvo XC40 feels a cut above mainstream SUVs.

What used Volvo XC40 trim levels are available?
The specification range starts with Momentum and includes most of the familiar Volvo trims. Availability is good for most, and equipment is generally strong throughout the Volvo XC40 line-up.
Volvo XC40 Momentum
The entry-level model is the Volvo XC40 Momentum, but it’s not exactly what you’d call poorly equipped, as detailed below. If you do want a few extra toys, it’s worth seeking out Volvo XC40 Momentum Pro models, which gain heated front seats, an electrically adjustable driver’s seat and a heated windscreen.
- 18-inch alloy wheels
- Dual-zone climate control
- Integrated sat-nav
- Customisable digital screen
Volvo XC40 R-Design
Volvo XC40 R-Design models beef up the looks with some cosmetic upgrades. As with the Volvo XC40 Momentum, the R-Design also has a Pro version, which adds the same extras as the Momentum Pro, plus smart 20-inch alloy wheels and electric adjustment for the front passenger seat.
- Contrasting black roof
- High-gloss black bumper and grills
- Dual exhaust pipes
- Perforated leather steering wheel
- Leather-wrapped gear lever
Volvo XC40 Inscription
Where the Volvo XC40 R-Design is supposed to be sporty, the Volvo XC40 Inscription is intended to be more luxurious. Volvo XC40 Inscription Pro versions get the same extras as Volvo XC40 R-Design Pro models, mentioned above.
- Full leather interior
- Wooden veneer inlays
- Crystal gear lever (on auto models)
- Front parking sensors
- Electrically operated tailgate
Volvo XC40 Recharge P8
The all-electric model, the Volvo XC40 Recharge P8, offers plenty of power (414PS) and a long range (nearly 300 miles). It was pricey when new, but used versions are better value.
Is a used Volvo XC40 a good buy?
If you want an upmarket small SUV, you have plenty of choice from brands like BMW and Audi. But if you prefer something with a bit of understated cool about it, then a Volvo XC40 is a great choice.
As with the company’s larger SUV models, the Volvo XC40 is a safe and sophisticated machine, mixing an understated Scandinavian design with cutting-edge safety tech and top-notch build quality. It’s decent to drive, too.
