Shopping around for a used car can be a world of doubts and endless research. You have to consider a cars' history, its specification, whether its in tip-top condition... the list goes on. You also have to think about your security once you've taken the plunge with the car of your choice, what if there are issues that no-one could have foreseen?

To ensure you aren't caught out by disastrous reliability, you'll want to be looking out for used cars that are still covered by the original warranty they were originally sold with.

Making the most of used car warranty is quite easy to do, especially when new cars nowadays will often be sold with five or even seven year-warranties. With a bit of digging, you could find yourself driving around in a used car that still has three years' warranty left.

While you can purchase aftermarket used car warranties – and many second-hand car dealers offer short, three-month warranties with their used cars – getting a car with a decent amount of factory warranty left on it is a much better way of going about it.

There are certain car manufacturers like Kia and Ssangyong that offer generous warranty terms with new cars, so it's possible you could get your hands on a used model that still has at least three years of manufacturer-backed warranty left, even if it's already a couple of years old.

If this kind of protection is important to you, you do have a relatively restricted list of manufacturers to choose from, but that's not to say you won't be looking at desirable cars. Used models from Hyundai, Jeep, MG, Mitsubishi, Subaru and Toyota will all be available with plenty of warranty cover.

Read on for our pick of the seven best used cars you can buy with three years' warranty remaining.

Used cars with three years' manufacturer warranty

1. Toyota Aygo

Best used city car with three years' warranty left

Latest Toyota Aygo deals from £4,590
Monthly finance from £82

Whether you want it as an affordable first car with a low insurance rating, or a chic little shopping trolley to pinwheel about town, the sharp-looking Toyota Aygo is a great little car for negotiating busy city traffic.

And as well as being blessed with Toyota’s towering reputation for dependability, the little Aygo gets the benefit of a five-year, 100,000-mile warranty from new, so even if the car is two years old, you'll still be looking at a three year warranty.

2. Jeep Renegade

Best used supermini with three years' warranty left

Latest Jeep Renegade deals from £8,300
Monthly finance from £136

Sure, this chunky Jeep looks like a big, unwieldy SUV, but put it in context with other 4x4s, like the Land Rover Discovery for example, and you’ll see how small it is. In fact, it’s based on the utilitarian and lovable Fiat Panda 4x4, and the mix of square-jawed American style with Italian supermini underpinnings is a genuinely appealing combination.

One minor fly in the ointment is the mileage limit on the warranty: it’ll expire after just 75,000 miles, but if you can find a low-mileage model, three-years ought to do you just fine.

3. Subaru XV

Best used small crossover with three years' warranty left

Latest Subaru XV deals from £12,495
Monthly finance from £209

The Subaru XV has more car-like looks than many other crossover SUVs, but in fact its four-wheel-drive hardware is tougher than that of many more serious-looking off-roaders. That’s because Subaru has always been committed to four-wheel drive designs, and it’s a brand beloved by farmers and those living in the more rugged parts of the world.

Besides that utilitarian reputation, the XV makes a very practical small family car. It should be on your shortlist whether you’re a Welsh sheep farmer or an office worker.

4. Jeep Compass

Best used medium crossover with three years' warranty left

Latest Jeep Compass deals from £15,250
Monthly finance from £192

The compact Jeep Compass offers car-like convenience rolled into a muscular SUV body. It’s got those typical Jeep looks, too, with the distinctive seven-bar grille at the front giving it an instantly recognisable family face. But as well as off-roader heritage rivalled only by a car wearing a Land Rover badge, this Jeep offers a pretty impressive five-year warranty from new.

It’s a bit of a shame Jeep has again only limited its warranty to 75,000 miles, but as long as you find a low-mileage used example there should be plenty of warranty left over.

5. Toyota GT86

Best used sporty car with three years' warranty left

Latest Toyota GT86 deals from £13,998
Monthly finance from £200

Sports cars are not supposed to be about being sensible but, hey, if you’ve got yourself a sporty car that’s dependable, then you can simply spend more time enjoying it, right? That certainly would seem to be the logic, should you plump for Toyota’s excellent GT86.

This is a slinky coupe with a characterful-sounding engine and a driving experience that’s sure to make you smile. You can even squeeze a couple of passengers into the rear seats (though only if they’re not enormously tall) and enjoy the extra security of 100,000 miles of warranty.

6. Hyundai i30 Tourer

Best used estate with three years' warranty left

Latest Hyundai i30 Tourer deals from £9,495
Monthly finance from £160

The i30 Tourer is able to swallow more than 600 litres of luggage. And that’s before you start folding rear seats down. But the i30 is more than just a one-trick pony: it’s refined, economical and the level of fit and finish is genuinely impressive.

Better still, Hyundai clearly has confidence in its products as, although limiting its warranty to five years, it puts no limit at all on the mileage

7. Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV

Best used large SUV with three years' warranty left

Latest Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV deals from £11,590
Monthly finance from £177

The Mitsubishi Outlander was one of the first mainstream plug-in hybrid SUVs. Hook it up to a charging point and you can enjoy all the benefits of a large SUV (plenty of interior space, a commanding view of the road, chunky styling) but without the gas guzzling downsides. In fact, on a full charge you can go up to 28 miles without needing to engage the petrol engine at all.

The only downside to all this is that Mitsubishi’s five-year warranty is limited to just 62,500 miles.
