Best used cars for under £200 a month

From sporty hatchbacks to big SUVs: you can find the perfect used car for under £200 a month

BuyaCar team
Nov 8, 2018

As little as £200 a month might not sound like a lot for a car, but it opens up an entire world of personal mobility. Family hatchbacks, large SUVs, and even sporty coupes all fall within the realms of this budget.

Many of them are barely two years old, and so still have some of their manufacturer's warranty remaining.

All of the quotes are based on Personal Contract Purchase (PCP) deals with a ten per cent deposit. This type of finance allows you to buy the car at the end of the agreement for a lump sum or return it. Depending on its value, you may also be able to trade it in for a new model.

Best used cars for under £200 a month

1. Mini Cooper S

Best used car under £200 a month for driving fun

Our pick Mini Cooper S Hatchback
Latest Mini Cooper S deals from £10,500
Finance from £160 per month

There are more powerful hatchbacks around, but few cars – at any price – are as much fun to drive as a Mini Cooper S. If you’re looking for practicality, this won’t be for you, but as long as you don’t need to use the rear seats often, the small interior won’t be a problem. Prices for the current-generation car have now dropped to below £200 per month, so you can have all of the car's retro charm combined with modern technology and safety.

The affordable finance payments are largely down to strong demand for the car, which keeps used car prices high. Because PCP finance repayments are based on the value that the car is expected to lose over the course of the agreement, these high prices help keep finance costs low.

2. Renault Kadjar

Best used car under £200 a month for families

Our pick Renault Kadjar 1.2 TCe Dynamique Nav
Latest Renault Kadjar deals from £11,000
Finance from £156 per month

Underneath the Renault badge on the bonnet, you'll find that the Kadjar uses the same mechanical parts as the popular Nissan Qashqai. It's a better car, though, thanks to its larger boot and higher-quality interior. Cars that were on the road before February 2018 also benefit from a four-year warranty, providing extra reassurance for used buyers.

As a crossover, the Kadjar is taller than a standard hatchback, bringing a higher driving position and making it easier to strap children into the back seats. You can choose from well-equipped Dynamique Nav models with either petrol or diesel engines for under £200 per month.

3. Mercedes A-Class

Best used car under £200 a month for Mercedes style and luxury

Our pick Mercedes A180d Sport
Latest Mercedes A-Class deals from £10,927
Finance from £163 per month

Despite the launch of an all-new Mercedes A-Class earlier this year, demand for the earlier model is still strong, and prices are expected to remain high for several years. This helps to keep finance costs low, and there are currently 46 A-Class cars on BuyaCar for less than £200 per month.

The car is designed to feel sporty and one side effect is that it will jolt you around on bumpy roads. It's fairly luxurious elsewhere, thanks to standard artificial leather upholstery and a touchscreen that's eight inches in size on mid-range Sport models. Aim for a 2016 car, as most include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, so apps can be controlled from the touchscreen or with voice commands. These also use the newer 180d diesel engine, rather than the older 180CDI, and comply with the latest Euro 6 emissions standards. Some earlier diesel A-Classes don't meet the standards, so they'll face extra charges in some city centres from next year.

4. BMW 3 series

Best used car under £200 a month for premium quality

Our pick BMW 320i SE
Latest BMW 3 Series deals from £10,489
Finance from £163 per month

If you want a little luxury and prestige for your £200, then you should set your sights on a small sports saloon. Options here include the Audi A4, Mercedes C Class and Lexus IS, but the best option in this price bracket is the BMW 3 Series, as it’s the best to drive, and there are plenty to choose from.

Petrol or diesel models are available for less than £200 per month, and it;s hard to overlook the efficient, smooth and quiet diesel engines. However, most of the cheapest diesel cars don't comply with the latest Euro 6 emissions standard, so they'll be subject to city centre emission charges from next year. If they are likely to affect you (see our guide), it's better to opt for petrol.

5. Mazda 6

Best used car under £200 a month for all-round versatility

Our pick Mazda 6 2.2D SE-L Nav
Latest Mazda 6 deals from £8,999
Finance from £158 per month

The Mazda 6 adds a dash of style to the large family saloon format – a type of car not generally known for glamour. But the Mazda doesn’t forget the job of being a practical jack-of-all-trades. It’s spacious, economical and has a reputation for good reliability, so it reamains an excellent choice, despite its replacement with a new model this year.

This type of car has been unpopular in recent years, with buyers opting for SUVs and people carriers instead, but the Mazda 6 proves that a simple saloon can still provide brilliant family motoring.

6. Peugeot 308 SW

Best used car under £200 a month for load space

Our pick Peugeot 308 SW 1.2 Puretech Active
Latest Peugeot 308 SW deals from £7,755
Finance from £135 per month

The cavernous 660-litre load area of the Peugeot 308 SW is the biggest in its class, although this does come at a cost to rear passenger comfort (it's not the car for carrying 6ft adults in the back). The minimalist dashboard looks high-tech, thanks to a central screen that keeps buttons to a minimum on all but entry-level Access models.

The most common used cars are Active cars, with alloy wheels, climate control, rear parking sensors and sat-nav, and higher-specification Allure models, which add a reversing camera, front sensors and bright LED headlights. Puretech petrol models are best but you can buy diesel with confidence. Since the car went on sale in 2014, all versions of the 308 with BlueHDi diesel engines have complied with the latest Euro 6 emissions regulations, so they won't be affected by future low emission zone charges.

7. Vauxhall Mokka X

Best used car under £200 a month for nearly-new savings

Our pick Vauxhall Mokka X Design Nav 1.6 CDTi
Latest Vauxhall Mokka X deals from £11,122
Finance from £163 per month

No matter what type of car you're looking to buy for under £200, there's almost certainly a Vauxhall that fits the bill. There's a seven-seater (Zafira Tourer), a big estate car (Insignia), sporty hatchback (Astra GTC), and even a convertible (Cascada).

Unfortunately for Vauxhall, having its badge on a car seems to spell an large loss of value as soon as it's driven away by its first owner, even though the current range is generally pretty good. On the used market, these big price reductions result in cheap finance deals.

Which is why you have a pick of 2017 Vauxhall Mokka X models to choose from. Slightly smaller than a Nissan Qashqai and Ford Kuga, this crossover car is comfortable and efficient in diesel form, with a solid-feeling interior and good level of standard equipment.

8. BMW 2 Series Coupe

Best used car under £200 a month for performance

Our pick BMW 218d SE Coupe
Latest Audi TT deals from £11,599
Finance from £171 per month

The BMW 1 Series hatchback is a popular choice, offering familiar BMW quality, performance and design from the rest of the range at a reasonably affordable price.

For a little bit extra you can buy extra style with the 2 Series Coupe: a redesigned version of the 1 Series with just two doors and an extended boot, giving it a sleeker look.

Even entry level cars provide a thump of acceleration, and combine comfort with sprightly performance in bends, making the car fun to drive. You'll normally find a few cars around the £200 per month mark, although prices sometimes creep over the limit by a few pounds.

Even early 218d diesel cars should meet current Euro 6 emissions standards, so you won't have to worry about future low emission zone charges - it's worth double-checking to make sure, though.

9. Dacia Duster

Best used car under £200 a month for value

Our pick Dacia Duster 1.5 dCi 110 Laureate
Latest Dacia Duster deals from £7,190
Finance from £112 per month

The Dacia Duster offers an enormous amount of car for your money, giving you a good-sized SUV for less than the cost of a supermini like the Ford Fiesta. It’s comfortable too. Avoid the spartan entry-level Access models, as they really do offer little in the way of standard kit. Equipment is much more generous in the Laureate trim level, which offers alloy wheels, a digital radio, air-conditioning and cruise control.

The new version of the Duster, which went on sale earlier this year remains above the £200 per month threshold, but you'd barely know the difference from outside, so it won't make the older model look too dated.

10. Honda CR-V

Best used car under £200 a month for the space and height of an SUV

Our pick Honda CR-V 1.6 i-DTEC S
Latest Honda CR-V deals from £10,599
Finance from £172 per month

Combining the rugged looks and high driving position of an off-roader with the practicality of an estate makes the CR-V a formidable family car. Add in high-tech safety features and a great reputation for reliability, and the CR-V becomes quite a tempting proposition.

Be careful which one you go for, though - even though this car looks like an off-roader, most models are front-wheel drive only. If you need to get out of muddy fields on a regular basis, make sure you pick the four-wheel drive versions, although you may need to stretch your budget a little.
