Best used cars for under £200 per month

With everything from sporty coupes to smart family SUVs available for less than £200 per month, you’ll find a great used car to suit you

Oct 4, 2021

A budget of £200 per month is enough for you to consider buying a brand new car, and that might seem exciting, but opting for a used car instead might leave you feeling better off.

If you're looking for new cars at this price point, you'll be restricted to the most basic versions of smaller and cheaper models. Most of these will lack modern features such as up to date media systems and smartphone connectivity. Take a look at used cars, however, and it's a different story.

Look past the fact the car has been used you'll see that you're getting your hands on a substantially better deal. You'll have the option of bigger cars, with better engines, more modern features.

A low-mileage and well maintained used car can represent excellent value for money compared to a brand new equivalent. Even if you normally steer clear of buying used, the fact a car is used shouldn't always be seen as a bad thing.

If a used car has been looked after properly it can be difficult to tell it's been used at all, especially if it's only a couple of years old, but you'll still be able to save thousands of pounds over the course of your finance contract.

We have 5868 used cars for under £200 per month on BuyaCar, and plenty of those are new enough that they will still be covered by the manufacturer warranty. Read on for our top choices, or head over to the BuyaCar search page if you're ready to take a closer look at what's on offer.

Best used cars for under £200 per month

1. Mini Hatchback

Best used car under £200 per month for driving fun

 Our pick Mini Cooper S
Used deals from £13,590
Monthly finance from £216*

High-performance hatchbacks are getting faster and faster, but few cars at any price are as much fun to drive as the Mini Cooper S. The prices we've picked out are for the petrol version, because it's quick, enjoyable to drive, and should be economical enough for most lifestyles. We've also chosen the five-door version for much better access to the rear seats than the three-door Cooper S.

Among rivals like the Ford Fiesta and Volkswagen Polo, the Cooper S has more distinctive looks with the bulky front end and bonnet scoop giving an imposing and sporty look. The equipment list is reasonably long, too, especially in Cooper S form, with sports seats, 17-inch alloy wheels, cruise control and sports suspension included.

2. Renault Kadjar

Best used car under £200 per month for families

Our pick Renault Kadjar Dynamique Nav
Used deals from £11,000
Monthly finance from £199*

Underneath the Renault badge on the bonnet, you'll find that the Renault Kadjar uses the same mechanical parts as the popular Nissan Qashqai. The Renault offers a larger boot than the Qashqai, though, and a higher-quality interior.

The particular model we've picked here is the Dynamique Nav trim that comes with a seven-inch touchscreen media system with Tom-Tom sat-nav as standard, 17-inch alloy wheels and a whole load of additional kit including air-conditioning, cruise control, a digital radio and Bluetooth connectivity.

As a crossover, the Kadjar is taller than a standard hatchback, bringing a higher driving position and making it easier to strap children into the back seats. You can choose from these well-equipped Dynamique Nav models with either petrol or diesel engines for under £200 per month.

3. Mercedes A-Class

Best used car under £200 per month for Mercedes style

Our pick Mercedes A-Class AMG Line
Used deals from £14,380
Monthly finance from £253*

Despite a newer Mercedes A-Class being available, demand for the earlier model is still strong, and prices have dropped considerably, making these more accessible. This helps to keep finance costs low.

The A-Class is intended to give you a sporty driving experience, but the aggressively stiff ride on models with the largest wheels will not be for everyone. It has an artificial leather interior, an eight-inch media system and climate control though, which help to make the car feel like a more upmarket machine, and there's Android Auto and Apple CarPlay available as well.

We've gone for models with AMG Line trim, which adds to the sporty nature of the A-Class with an additional body kit, lowered suspension and 18-inch alloy wheels. You'll typically find diesel versions of this car for under £200 per month, but these are still a good choice - especially for those who cover a high annual mileage.

4. BMW 3 series

Best used car under £200 per month for all-round appeal

Our pick BMW 3 Series M Sport
Used deals from £13,995
Monthly finance from £276*

If you want a little luxury and prestige for your £200 per month, then you may want to set your sights on an upmarket machine like the BMW 3 Series saloon. Alternative options here include the Audi A4, Mercedes C-Class and Lexus IS, but the best bet in this price bracket is the BMW 3 Series. It’s the best to drive and there are plenty to choose from.

Both petrol and diesel models are available within this budget, but it's hard to overlook the efficient, smooth and quiet 320d diesel. In particular, we've gone for 3 Series models in M Sport spec, which comes with a huge list of equipment additions, but also adds a bodykit for a sportier look, 18-inch alloy wheels and stiffer suspension for a sharper drive to match the looks.

new 3 Series arrived in the UK in 2019, meaning that deals on these older models are particularly good, making them a great choice for those on a budget.

5. Mazda 6

Best used car under £200 per month for standard equipment

Our pick Mazda 6 Sport Nav
Used deals from £11,495
Monthly finance from £242*

The Mazda 6 adds a dash of style to the large family saloon format - a type of car not generally known for glamour. But the Mazda doesn’t forget the job of being a practical jack-of-all-trades either. It’s spacious, economical - with particularly frugal, smooth and powerful diesel engines - and has a reputation for good reliability, so it reamains an excellent choice.

Within this budget you can go for a top-of-the-range Sport Nav model, which will give you a plethora of kit that you would normally have to pay extra for, including climate-control, tinted windows, 19-inch alloy wheels, a reversing camera and a head-up display, which beams driving information onto the windscreen in front of the drive.

The best thing about the Mazda 6 is that it doesn't matter whether you're most interested in style, comfort, an enjoyable drive, getting lots of kit for the money or fuel economy - it's very good in all of these areas. And if the 6 saloon isn't practical enough for you, there's always the 6 Tourer estate, which has a bigger and more usable boot.

6. Peugeot 308 SW

Best used car under £200 per month for load space

Peugeot 308 SW front

Our pick Peugeot 308 SW GT Line
Used deals from £7,990
Monthly finance from £165*

The cavernous 660-litre load area of the Peugeot 308 SW is the biggest you can find in a car of this size, although this does come at a cost to rear passenger comfort (it's not the car for carrying particularly tall adults in the back). The minimalist dashboard looks high-tech, thanks to a central media screen that keeps buttons to a minimum on all but entry-level Access models.

Within this price range, we've found 308 SW examples in GT Line spec, which adds a few sporty styling touches on the outside such as twin-exhaust pipes, 18-inch alloy wheels and LED headlights, while you also gain a reversing camera and fancy red stiching inside. A car with this much tech is hard to come by at such a modest price - especially one that offers so much boot space.

7. Vauxhall Mokka X

Best used car under £200 per month for nearly new savings

Our pick Vauxhall Mokka X Elite Nav
Used deals from £11,990
Monthly finance from £203*

No matter what type of car you're looking to get for under £200 per month, there's almost certainly a Vauxhall that fits the bill, whether it's a seven-seat Zafira Tourer, a big Insignia estate, a sporty Astra GTC hatchback, or even a Cascada convertible.

Unfortunately for Vauxhall, having its badge on a car seems to spell an large loss of value as soon as it's driven away by its first owner, even though the current range is generally pretty good. While that's bad for the first owner, it's fantastic news if you want to get a great car for a low cost, with these big price reductions resulting in cheap finance deals.

That's why you can find top value deals on the Vauxhall Mokka X and you'll even be able to help yourself to the top-of-the-range Elite Nav models, which come with a whole host of standard kit to make the prospect of driving one much more enticing.

8. BMW 2 Series Coupe

Best used car under £200 per month for performance

 Used deals from £12,200
Monthly finance from £230*

The BMW 2 Series Coupe sits comfortably within this £200 per month price range and not only does it look sharp, with its sleek, sporty lines, but it also backs that up with a sporty driving experience.

Even entry-level cars with the smallest engines provide a reasonable thump of acceleration, and combine comfort with sprightly handling around corners, making the car fun to drive. You'll normally find a few cars around the £200 per month mark, although prices sometimes creep over the limit by a few pounds.

Even early 218d diesel cars should meet current Euro 6 emissions standards, so you won't have to worry about low emission zone charges, which apply to most older diesel models - it's worth double-checking to make sure, though.

9. Dacia Duster

Best used car under £200 per month for value

 Our pick Dacia Duster Prestige
Used deals from £10,599
Monthly finance from £194*

The Dacia Duster offers an enormous amount of car for your money, giving you a reasonably practical SUV for less than the cost of a supermini like the Ford Fiesta. Avoid the spartan entry-level Access models, as they really do offer very little in the way of equipment and you should be happy. We've gone for the Prestige models, as these offer a much more appealing amount of kit for a very affordable price.

The new version of the Duster, which went on sale in 2018 has dropped below the £200 per month threshold in many cases, with even some 2021 models available for less than this. If you can find one that suits your needs it's a wise choice, as it looks a little more modern than the previous model and the interior is a little more spacious and more stylish.

However, the differences are pretty subtle, so if you'd rather cut your monthly payments go for a pre-2018 model, as very few people would notice from the outside that you're driving the older version.

10. Honda CR-V

Best used car under £200 per month for SUV style and space

 Our pick Honda CR-V 4x4

Combining the rugged looks and high driving position of an off-roader with the practicality of an estate makes the CR-V a formidable family car. Add in high-tech safety features and a great reputation for reliability, and the CR-V becomes quite a tempting proposition.

Be careful which one you go for, though - even though this car looks like an off-roader, most models are front-wheel drive only. Therefore, if you need to get out of muddy fields or tackle other particularly slippery surfaces on a regular basis, make sure you pick one of the four-wheel drive versions.

Even with four-wheel drive the CR-V isn't a tough off-roader. Think of it as a high-rise family-friendly hatchback with a bit of extra traction in four-wheel drive form and you shouldn't be disappointed.
