2019 SUV deals: big savings on new and used cars

The best new and used SUV deals, with prices from under £10,000

If you’re looking for an sport utility vehicle (SUV), then this should be the perfect shortlist. We’ve combined best new models in showrooms and past class-leaders on used car forecourts, with some of the most competitive deals available.

Tall, spacious and rugged, SUVs are perfect for family life, even though the shape was first developed for off-road driving. Many cars still have plenty of ability when the going gets tough, thanks to four-wheel drive, which can help get the car moving in slippery conditions, or prove useful when towing.

However, many models in this list are also available as cheaper two-wheel drive SUVs, which will mean they return better fuel economy. Fitted with winter tyres, they can also grip surprisingly well on snow. All have the high driving position and generous ground clearance to give their driver more confidence than, say, a family saloon or estate car.

From budget buys, such as the Dacia Duster, to luxury living with a Volvo XC90, there are some of the best SUVs for your shortlist.

We’ve divided the guide into sections for used and new SUVs, which you can also pay for with monthly finance. You can click below to jump straight to the section you’re interested in:

Best used SUV deals

Best new SUV deals

Best used SUV deals for less than £10,000

Dacia Duster

Best buy Dacia Duster 1.5 dCi 110 Laureate 4x4
Latest Dacia Duster deals from £6,480
Finance from £122 per month

If the Dacia Duster were a superhero character it would probably be Danger Mouse. Here is a hard-grafting, have-a-go hero that is unpretentious, likeable and free of frills.

It seats a family of five in relative comfort, the boot’s up to the job of lugging luggage or a pet dog or two, and if you get it filthy or end up scuffing a panel or two during the time you own it you probably won’t care because of its utilitarian vibe.

Both front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive models are available for £10,000, while some cars are barely two-years old.

The majority of used Dusters in this price range will be powered by a 1.5-litre turbodiesel engine, borrowed from parent company Renault. It’s perfectly acceptable, pulls eagerly and returns respectable fuel economy.

The downsides to running about in a Duster are that it’s a bit noisy and the Euro NCAP crash test scores aren’t as good as more expensive SUVs. But if you can put up with those, there’s a lot to like about this unsung hero.

Vauxhall Antara

Best buy Vauxhall Antara 2.2 CDTi SE

On paper, the Vauxhall Antara is the ideal SUV if you’re on a budget and want a lot of car for your money. That’s because the moment new models were driven out of showrooms, they fell by frankly frightening sums of money.

This plays neatly into the hands of used car buyers. A three-year old car costs around £8000 to £9000, which is fair value considering it would have been between £25,000 and £30,000 when new.

However, it’s not without its shortcomings. The Antara is a sport-utility vehicle (SUV), designed from the ground up as a heavy-duty off-road car, so comes with four-wheel drive on certain models but on the road it feels heavy (because it is), leans in bends and the 2.2-litre diesel engine is on the noisy side.

Still, you get the usual high driving position, plenty of interior space for five people and generous levels of equipment – although why the sat nav screen is by the driver’s knee is beyond us. It’s a world away from more modern, and more expensive, alternatives such as the Mazda CX-5, Peugeot 3008 and Nissan Qashqai.

Best used SUV deals for less than £15,000

Land Rover Freelander

Best buy Land Rover Freelander HSE 2.2 TD4 auto
Latest Land Rover Freelander deals from £11,999
Finance from £221 per month

For many drivers, there is a certain sense of satisfaction that comes from having a Land Rover parked outside their home. For drivers after a relatively modern, practical model that can take family life in its stride but won’t cost a king’s ransom to run, the second generation Freelander is the one to aim for.

When new the Land Rover Freelander was the best car of its type both on- and off-road. As a used car, it’s no less capable but – yes; you guessed it - considerably cheaper.

This is a spacious family car that comes with a big boot and under the surface is the reassurance of one of the best four-wheel drive systems on the road. Little wonder the Freelander won plenty of awards in its day.

It was replaced with the Land Rover Discovery Sport in 2015, but you’ll be waiting some time before used prices fall to these levels.

Kia Sportage deal

Best buy Kia Sportage 2.0 CRDi
Latest Kia Sportage deals from £8,400
Finance from £136 per month

Naturally, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but we’re rather smitten with the look of Kia’s previous generation Sportage. Styled to stand out of the SUV crowd, it’s distinctive without resorting to gimmicks.

You can identify four-wheel drive versions of the Kia Sportage by their ‘KX’ badges, and there are plenty of options available. What’s more, you can choose a KX-3 model that’s loaded with options, such as heated front and rear seats and a panoramic sunroof, for little more than the cost of a more basic version.

Whichever version you opt for, it will have a spacious interior and with a budget of up to £15,000, you can afford a 2015 model, meaning the original new car warranty will run all the way to 2022. So it’s stylish and sensible.

Ford Kuga

Typical example Ford Kuga 2.0 TDCI
Latest Ford Kuga deals from £8,480
Finance from £143 per month

Perhaps the most compelling reason for choosing a Kuga is that because it’s one of the better selling SUVs, you will be spoilt for choice. This makes it easier to drive a hard bargain.

There are plenty of Ford Kugas costing less than £15,000, but if your budget is at the upper end of this scale, then you should aim for one of the more modern versions, which were built from 2013.

You can recognise these from the large triangular grilles that sit underneath each of the headlights. Models fitted with four-wheel drive only use the system when grip is reduced: the rest of the time, the engine only powers the two front wheels, helping to save fuel.

The most powerful diesel engine, with 163 horsepower (also written as 163PS) has four-wheel drive as standard. To drive, it’s pleasingly responsive, but some rivals, including the Mazda CX-5, are better still.

Best used SUV deals for less than £20,000

Best buy BMW X3 xDrive20d SE Auto
Latest BMW X3 deals from £14,999
Finance from £208 per month

BMW liked the look of the X3 so much that it barely changed the design when it updated the car in 2014, which means that you can buy a four-year-old model from £15,000, or a two and a half-year old version for £20,000. Either way, they’ll look little different to a new X3.

Choose your model wisely, as even on the used car market BMWs are sensitive to specification, so a lurid paint and interior trim colour combination is likely to fall in value faster than a classic combination.

It feels quite sporty to drive although the ride comfort isn’t as smooth as some SUVs and there is a bit of grumble from the popular diesel engine.

Volvo XC90

Best buy Volvo XC90 D5 Geartronic
Latest Volvo XC90 deals from £18,980
Finance from £347 per month

Did you know, according to Thatcham, the organisation that helps to independently test the safety and security of new cars, nobody in the UK has been killed while driving a Volvo XC90.

The car’s design may have dated to the point of being retro, but the previous-generation Volvo XC90 is still a safe, tough and practical car, with seven seats fitted as standard. And even if you do use all those seats, there’s still enough boot space for a modest weekly shop.

For less than £20,000, you’ll be browsing five-year-old models. The good news is, they age fairly well, so it should still feel like a premium car inside, and the seats are exceedingly comfortable.

The D5 diesel engine is a willing performer and has a characterful sound to it, and when paired with the automatic gearbox, it makes for a relaxing drive, especially with the reassurance of having four-wheel drive fitted as standard.

Best used SUV deals for less than £30,000

Range Rover Evoque

Best buy Range Rover Evoque 2.2 SD4 Pure Tech auto
Latest Range Rover Evoque deals from £14,890
Finance from £156 per month

With the Evoque, Land Rover dared to be different and the gamble paid off. The SUV sacrificed practicality over style, but drivers didn’t mind one bit, making the it one of the most successful Land Rovers of all time.

That popularity brought about the peculiar problem of more demand than supply for used cars, meaning they were initially expensive (great for those selling) and hard to source. After seven years of production there are more than enough cars to keep up with demand, meaning the most affordable models are now around £14,000.

The good news is that even the standard specification Pure cars have a luxurious interior with leather seats. Go for Pure Tech to add sat-nav.

Volkswagen Touareg

Best buy Volkswagen Touareg R Line 3.0 TDI 4Motion auto
Latest Volkswagen Touareg deals from £18,495
Finance from £310 per month

You can buy Volkswagen’s biggest SUV for less or more than £30,000, depending on the age, mileage and specification of model you want, but in our opinion £30,000 is the sweet spot that will get you a year-old model with the majority of its three-year VW warranty remaining.

This is for R-Line models with leather seats, panoramic sunroof, heated steering wheel, a motorised bootlid, and 20-inch alloy wheels.

When new, they had a list price of at least £48,735, but in their short life, they have already lost a quarter of that.

The V6 diesel engine is smooth and gives assured performance, four-wheel drive is standard and an automatic gearbox means you can sit back and let the car take the strain. As a family SUV with a plush feel, a used Touareg is well worth a test drive.

Best used SUV deals for under £40,000

Audi Q7

Best buy Audi Q7 TDI quattro S Line Plus
Latest Audi Q7 deals from £20,900
Finance from £318 per month

If it’s space you’re after, then the seven-seat, current generation Audi Q7 has it in spades. With the rear seats folded, the boot is enormous. Raised up, you’ll be able to carry five adults, with two children back in the snug rear row.

If your budget goes up to £40,000, then you’ll have a wide choice of S Line models that come with a long list of luxury extras.

The Q7’s interior isn’t just practical though. It looks upmarket and has a precision feel about it, while the entertainment system – something drivers have come to depend on – is one of the best in the business.

Nissan Qashqai

SAVE £3,898
Latest price £22,272
Model Nissan Qashqai 1.5 dCi N-Connecta

The Qashqai doesn’t excel in any one area but for those that are searching for a car that’s the equivalent of a comfort blanket, this is it.

A spacious, easy-to drive and competitively priced SUV, it comes into its own when you factor in the discounts that are available on the Nissan that’s the company’s biggest-selling model. The addition of a smooth new automatic adds to the desirability levels.

The new 1.3-litre petrol model is currently the pick of the range, thanks to its quiet and punchy performance which is probably why discounts are much smaller than the 15 per cent available off a diesel model in well-equipped N-Connecta trim - still an excellent choice.

Skoda Karoq

SAVE £2,028 Price from new £23,627
Model Skoda Karoq SE L 1.5 TSI

If you drive a Nissan Qashqai and are looking to replace it, but don’t want to sacrifice value for money then give the Skoda Karoq a go.

The Karoq ticks all the boxes buyers of this type of car seek. The driving position is reassuringly lofty and commanding, there is space for a family of five, and the range of engines, gearboxes and option of four-wheel drive (on certain models) means there is something for most budgets in this class.

We also rate the Mini Countryman, for personality and design flair as much as anything, but when it comes to a complete package, the Karoq is the one to beat.

Skoda Kodiaq

SAVE £3,518
Latest price £28,127
Model Skoda Kodiaq Edition 1.5 TSI

What’s this? Another Skoda? We make no apologies. The Kodiaq is an outstanding large SUV at a refreshingly ordinary price.

Pick the option of two extra seats in the back and this is a car that can cope with extra passengers during a school run or birthday party, then be converted back to a five-seater with a boot that will happily hold more than a holiday’s worth of luggage.

A surprise star of the engine range of the 1.5-litre petrol unit, which is smooth, potent enough and returns almost diesel-like levels of fuel consumption.

Volvo XC40

SAVE £1,297
Latest price £33,008
Model Volvo XC40 Design Pro 2.0 D4 AWD Geartronic

The XC40 is the pick of the compact SUVs from the premium brands. To see off the German car makers, not to mention Jaguar and Lexus, is quite an achievement for Volvo.

What’s so good about the XC40? We like the way it looks – stylish but tough – and appreciate the comfortable interior.

The quality is up there with the best and the driving experience is polished. Add the proven 2-litre diesel engine, all-wheel drive and an automatic gearbox and you have an SUV for all reasons and seasons.

Land Rover Discovery

SAVE £4,839
Latest price £48,906 (with finance)
Model Land Rover Discovery SE 2.0

Delivering the most impressive blend of spacious accommodation and rugged, go-anywhere, tow-anything capability, the Land Rover Discovery is a hard working car. Yet it is also luxurious inside, better than ever to drive – influenced by a significant reduction in weight for the current generation model – and comes with much improved entertainment system compared to previous generation models.

A 9 per cent discount, available when you take out finance, reduces the price of the car to under £50,000. It's still not cheap, but is a competitive price for every car that you'll ever need.

Volvo XC90

SAVE £6,835 Latest price £49,145 (with finance)
Model Volvo XC90 D5 AWD Inscription

Few large SUVs are as soothing as the XC90. Its interior feels like a Scandinavian furniture boutique but there’s space for seven adults to come along for the ride, assuming the two adults in the rear most seats are friends.

Most of the car’s controls are operated through a large touchscreen. It can take time to get familiar with navigating it, and keeping your eyes on the road is a challenge until you do master it, but other than that this is a relaxing way to travel.

The petrol engines are increasingly popular, and there is a plug-in hybrid option, but the latter is pricey and the diesel is still the default choice for most buyers.

Best new SUV deals for more than £50,000

Audi e-tron

SAVE £3,180
Latest price £68,310
Model Audi e-tron 55 Quattro

Audi's all-electric SUV hasn't even arrived on British streets yet, but it is on sale and already available with a saving of 4.5 per cent.

Despite being the brand's first full electric car, it's no revolution. Instead, it's designed to be completely familiar to Audi buyers, with the same mix of quality materials, hi-tech features and tightly-fitted interior as the rest of the range.

Unsurprisingly, it's much quieter on the road than the brand's other luxury models. That's not just down to the electric motor: wind noise has been minimised for whisper-quiet progress. Official tests give a 249 mile range between charges, which should still equate to more than 200 miles in more-demanding conditions. It's not quite as far as the Jaguar I-Pace, but should be plenty for most journeys.
