Buying a brand new car has to be the most expensive way to change your wheels. If you don't fancy going for a used car, however, there is another, far better value way to get that new car smell and feel-good factor: pre-registered cars and new cars in stock.

Pre-registered cars, to all intents and purposes, are brand new, with less than 100 miles on the clock and being less than a year old. However, as they've been registered by a dealer - normally so the dealer can hit sales targets by selling the car to themselves - you are the second owner rather than the first.

In exchange for not being the first owner - and frankly, no one is going to know you're not, as pre-registered cars often still have the latest number plates - these effectively new cars come with the type of price you'd expect on a used car. So if you want a new car but like the idea of saving thousands, this could be the way to do it.

Alternatively, if you're on a tighter budget, or want even more car for your money, used cars can make even more sense - you can also check out some of our best deals on 2020 cars. Yes, the car may not look like it's rolled straight out of the factory, but in exchange you can typically save yourself many thousands more - even compared with a pre-reg car. You can also choose to buy your next car at a specific time of year to make the most of seasonal changes in car prices.

Since modern cars are so well engineered, safe and long-lasting, even choosing a five-year-old car that has covered 50,000 miles should offer you many years of problem-free motoring. Below we've rounded up our selection of the best pre-reg and used deals on offer right now.

Keep reading to find the best deals on cars in stock that are available to order now for delivery to your door. Not only do you get to avoid new car dealer pricing but you also don't have to worry about the safety implications of travelling around the country going to showrooms following the coronavirus outbreak.

BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe deals

BMW 420i Gran Coupe M Sport auto201921,475£25,295

The sleek and classy BMW 4 Series gained an extra slice of usability when the more spacious 4 Series Gran Coupe arrived on the market. As a five-door model, the Gran Coupe could pass off as a family car if you have small children in the back, but taller passengers will struggle to enjoy the ride thanks to the low swooping roofline.

From the driver's seat, there is plenty to enjoy about the 4 Series. Build quality is excellent, and the amount of tech on board makes for a comfortable, convenient and entertaining experience. The iDrive media system that incorporates an intuitive rotary wheel and a 6.5-inch touchscreen display is one of the easiest and most satisfying systems to use.

Despite the larger dimensions of the Gran Coupe, it still feels brilliantly sporty to drive. Regardless of which engine is under the bonnet, the steering is precise and it sticks to the road well when you're driving quickly. The manual gearbox in the 420i might well appeal to purists looking for the ultimate driving experience, although the automatic is smooth and responsive if you'd rather make use of a more powerful engine.

Audi A3 deals

Used deals from £11,250

Audi A3 1.0 TFSI SE201736,700£14,299

The Audi A3 is known for its status as an upmarket and high-end family car, but it's often available on the used market at a surprisingly affordable price. In terms of build quality, technology and engineering, the A3 is superior to many of its rivals including the Vauxhall Astra and Ford Focus, but while it is much more expensive as a brand new car, a used model can help to close that cost gap.

As a five-door hatchback, the A3 provides easy access to the rear seats, which offer plenty of space for two adults to sit comfortably, or enough room for two child seats. It's quite a narrow car, which does limit boot space when packing pushchairs or other bulky items, but overall luggage capacity is pretty good at 380-litres.

In terms of engines, the 1.0-litre petrol TFSI offers surprisingly sharp performance considering its relatively low power output, and with the potential to achieve well over 50mpg, there's an argument to suggest this is all you will ever need. There are more powerful 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre options if you'd rather have a bit more punch, while a range of smooth and economical diesels might be more to your liking.

Ford Fiesta 1.0 EcoBoost Zetec201814,200£11,295

For a long time, the Ford Fiesta was the most popular car in the UK. It's very easy to see why; it's affordable, it's fun to drive, it's surprisingly practical, and it's easy to live with. It's also available with a peppy 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine that makes zipping around town a delight.

The current Fiesta first arrived on the market in 2017, so the interior still feels relatively modern, although it has been overtaken by the more recent arrival of the latest Vauxhall Corsa. The Fiesta is available in a wide range of trim levels, but the level of tech is good, even in more affordable Zetec models. There's a 6.5-inch media system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and it's worth looking out for the Driver Assistance pack with autonomous emergency braking and adaptive cruise control.

If you're trying to find the ultimate all-round car, the Fiesta ought to be on your shortlist. It's true, you could get a bigger car with more boot space for a similar price on the used market, but if you're looking for something smaller that's cheap to insure and cheap to run without sacrificing driving thrills, the Fiesta will fit the bill.

Renault Zoe deals

Renault Zoe 68kW Dynamique Nav 41kWh auto201818,545£12,099

If you're looking for an affordable but capable electric car that's easy to live with, the Renault Zoe ticks each of those boxes. It's a small five-door city car with a modern and comfortable interior and enough battery range to make it a suitable run about for anyone without the need to travel long distances.

The 41kWh battery is capable of covering up to around 186 miles from a full charge, so while it might need charging more regularly than some more expensive electric cars, daily overnight charges can be a great way to ensure you never need to worry about running low. Anyone living in an urban area with easy access to a charging point will find the Zoe fits very well into their lifestyle.

In terms of equipment, the Zoe has plenty of party tricks. Automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, rear parking sensors and cruise control help to take some of the strain away from driving, while a seven-inch touchscreen media system with Android Auto, sat-nav and voice control offer a convenient and modern experience for you and your passengers.
