Want the absolute best value car for your money? Check out our top deals of the week that offer plenty of bang for your buck

Buying a brand new car has to be the most expensive way to change your wheels. If you don't fancy going for a used car, however, there is another, far better value way to get that new car smell and feel-good factor: pre-registered cars and new cars in stock.

Pre-registered cars, to all intents and purposes, are brand new, with less than 100 miles on the clock and being less than a year old. However, as they've been registered by a dealer - normally so the dealer can hit sales targets by selling the car to themselves - you are the second owner rather than the first.

In exchange for not being the first owner - and frankly, no one is going to know you're not, as pre-registered cars often still have the latest number plates - these effectively new cars come with the type of price you'd expect on a used car. So if you want a new car but like the idea of saving thousands, this could be the way to do it.

Alternatively, if you're on a tighter budget, or want even more car for your money, used cars can make even more sense. Yes, the car may not look like it's rolled straight out of the factory, but in exchange you can typically save yourself many thousands more - even compared with a pre-reg car.

Since modern cars are so well engineered, safe and long-lasting, even choosing a five-year old car with 50,000 miles should offer you many years of problem-free motoring. Below we've rounded up our selection of the best pre-reg and used deals on offer right now.

Keep reading to find the best deals on cars in stock that are available to order now for delivery to your door. Not only do you get to avoid new car dealer pricing but you also don't have to worry about the safety implications of travelling around the country going to showrooms following the coronavirus outbreak.

Ford Focus deals

Ford Focus 1.0 EcoBoost 125 ST-Line Auto201719,000£11,799

The Ford Focus is a popular family car famed for offering decent comfort levels but being enjoyable to drive. The previous-generation Focus was even more fun to drive, making it a good choice for those who want a sensible hatchback that is engaging to drive.

With a range of punchy turbocharged petrol and diesel engines, most models are also pleasingly nippy, but remain brilliantly economical and affordable to run. The EcoBoost petrol engine is available in a variety of forms; most common are the 1.0-litre and 1.5-litre versions. The 1.0-litre is slower, but more economical in 100hp form, while it's also available with 125hp, which makes it slightly faster but less efficient.

The Focus range offers plenty of options: simple and cheap, high-tech and comfortable, or sporty and exciting. ST-Line trim offers a good blend of equipment and driving fun, with sporty touches included inside and out, and it's available at some great used car prices here on BuyaCar. We've picked out a great example that's ready for you at a great price, but if this one has already gone, you can be sure that there are plenty of other great-value Ford Focus deals available on our search page.

Nissan Qashqai deals

Nissan Qashqai 1.5 dCi 115 N-Connecta201919,400£17,800

High-riding SUVs often come with high prices, but that isn't a problem if you're open to driving a used model. The Nissan Qashqai has always been relatively affordable, and now a new model is on the way to help make second-hand versions potentially even better value.

The Qashqai has proven to be an extremely popular car for families thanks to its competitive pricing, but it does also deliver on a number of key points which mean it is often considered a benchmark for its rivals. There's plenty of space inside for a family of five, with a pair of Isofix points in the back no doubt appealing to younger families. The 430-litre boot is not massive, but provides plenty of space for a pushchair or a substantial grocery shop.

In terms of equipment inside, the Qashqai is best experienced in the more high-end N-Connecta trim, because this features a seven-inch touchscreen media display with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, sat-nav, a 360-degree camera and parking sensors - everything you need to keep the family entertained while making driving as stress-free as possible.

Volkswagen Sharan deals

Monthly finance from £357*

Volkswagen Sharan 2.0 TDI 150 SE Nav Auto202012,261£23,000

Need maximum space in your car for you and your family and a load of luggage? Inside the Volkswagen Sharan there's space for seven, and although the rearmost seats aren't the most spacious, the car does offer scope for carrying seven adults, provided those in the rearmost seats aren't too tall.

When it comes to boot space the Sharan still has 300 litres of room with all seats in place, which is more than many similarly sized cars. If you're ever in need of much more luggage space, though, you can fold down all of the rear five seats to open up a massive 2,297-litre cavern.

We're currently offering a used 2020 Sharan with a strong 2.0-litre diesel engine and an automatic gearbox that's only covered 12,000 miles. This particular model is in well-equipped SE Nav spec, with climate control and sat-nav included.

Smart Forfour deals

2018 Smart Forfour deals from £5,750
Monthly finance from £103*

ModelModel yearMileagePrice
Smart Forfour 1.0 Passion201830,500£6,050

The Smart ForFour is a more sociable version of the original Smart car that only came with two seats. If you like the idea of a Smart car, but you intend to bring more than one friend along for the ride, the ForFour is... for four.

It's still compact and manoeuvrable in tight city centres, but there are indeed two rear seats that offer enough space for two adults to sit in relative comfort. While this is definitely not a car designed to tackle hundreds of motorway miles, it's very much at home completing school runs and small shopping trips.

In terms of engines, the turbocharged 0.9-litre option is more powerful and more economical, but the 1.0-litre will do just fine as a far cheaper alternative. Even in the relatively cheap Passion trim, the level of equipment inside includes two Isofix points in the rear seats, cruise control and extra practical rear seats that can be adjusted to open up more boot space or provide more headroom. If you spend more money on Prime or Prime Premium models, luxuries such as heated seats and sat-nav are available, too.

Toyota Corolla deals

2020 Toyota Corolla deals from £16,995
Monthly finance from £230*

ModelModel yearMileagePrice
Toyota Corolla 2.0 VVT-i Hybrid Excel CVT20202,662£22,859

The Toyota Corolla name returned in 2019 with hybrid power and sharp, modern styling. Where previous models felt a bit grey and uninspiring, this family hatchback is far more interesting to look at and drive.

In terms of engines, the Corolla is available with either a standard 1.2-litre petrol engine, which is reasonably powerful and economical in its own right, or with two much better - but more expensive - petrol hybrid options. The 1.8-litre is the most efficient, Toyota claims its capable of 65mpg, but the 2.0-litre version is much more powerful and only slightly less economical according to Toyota's 60mpg claim.

Paired with the 2.0-litre hybrid engine, the Corolla is at its best in Excel trim. While this is the most expensive model, it comes with all the bells and whistles you would expect from a modern car: an eight-inch touchscreen media system with sat-nav, a seven-inch digital dashboard behind the steering wheel, automatic headlights, parking sensors, a reversing camera, adaptive cruise control and heated seats. There's a lot more, too, along with a host of the latest safety tech including autonomous emergency braking.

It might not be as popular as some of its rivals, but the Toyota Corolla should be considered a wildcard if you're looking for a comfortable, well-equipped, practical and economical family car. Bag this deal, or others like it, right here on BuyaCar.
