Warm your hands while saving money with the best used cars with a heated steering wheel

The next time you pull up next to an expensive luxury car at the traffic lights, you can feel smug in the knowledge that most of the stand-out features that are fitted to the poshest cars of the road ultimately find their way onto much more affordable models.

It means that the wealthiest drivers are not only choosing to pay a premium for the latest technology, but also acting as a guinea pig for the rest of us so that fancy systems are proven by the time they end up on, say, a humble Ford Fiesta.

Innovations we now take for granted, such as sat nav, automatic climate control, heated or, even, cooled seats, voice control, adjustable driving modes or life-saving safety equipment were once the preserve of the most expensive motors money could buy. And the next toy drivers want is a heated steering wheel.

Like heated seats, the warmed wheel is one of those things that you’ll not want to do without after experiencing it for the first time in a bone-chilling winter. At the touch of a button, heating elements beneath the surface of the wheel’s leather trim warm a defined area. On a frosty day, it means there’s no need to sit there rubbing your hands or cupping them over your mouth as you exhale warm air while waiting for the car’s heater to take the chill out of the interior.

Heated steering wheel option packs

Some car makers offer the heated steering wheel as standard, others want buyers to pay and add it as an optional extra. Where optional on a Volkswagen Golf, for example, it costs £160; for a Land Rover Discovery Sport it’s £200.

However, in some cases warming the wheel will be part of a package of items, such as a Winter Pack, that will include heating for the seats, steering wheel, windscreen washer and wing mirrors. The latest Volvo XC40 SUV is available with such a pack for £500.

All we need now is a heated gearlever. But that’s only a matter of time. Here are five models that are warm to the touch – and illustrate how such creature comforts have become widely available across a range of models.

Vauxhall Corsa

The best used car with a heated steering wheel for runaround prices

Vauxhall Corsas with heated steering wheels from £4,795
Finance from £88 per month

Affordable costs make the Corsa one of Britain’s best-selling cars, but that’s not to say it skimps on luxuries such as a heated steering wheel. For less than £4,795 there are used models available that were fitted from new with the heated steering wheel, which came as standard on the Energy trim level, and above.

If you want something a little larger from the same manufacturer, try Vauxhall’s Mokka, the SUV that is about the same price and size as a Nissan Juke.

Nissan Leaf

The best used car with a heated steering wheel for eco-friendliness

Nissan Leafs with heated steering wheels from £11,490
Finance from £188 per month

We’re curious to know how many Leaf owners dare to switch on their car’s heated seats and steering wheel on a chilly day, risking the range of the battery.

The previous-generation Leaf is capable of travelling up to around 130 miles on a single charge, but switch on all its electrical features on a wet, chilly day and you can expect that to fall below 100 miles. The heated steering wheel was added to the facelifted version of the first generation Leaf, that went on sale from 2013.

Kia Cee’d

The best used car with a heated steering wheel for warranty warriors

Kia Cee'ds with heated steering wheels from £12,900
Finance from £194 per month

Kia understands that buyers of affordable family hatchbacks would like to have posh-car features, so its Cee’d – the car best known for serving time for Top Gear’s Star in a Reasonably Priced Car – can be had with features including a heated steering wheel.

A rival to the VW Golf  and Ford Focus, the Cee’d is about as sensible – and exciting - as a pair of Clarks shoes, but for many drivers, that’s just fine, especially when its gadgets and gizmos may be covered by a warranty that lasts for up to seven years.

Land Rover Discovery Sport

The best used car with a heated steering wheel for off-roading ability

Land Rover Discovery Sports with heated steering wheels from £25,000
Finance from £370 per month

Land Rover’s most affordable model is the Discovery Sport, which went on sale in 2015. It’s also the company’s most popular, bringing a combination of practicality – seven seats and four-wheel drive are available with most models -  and affordable running costs to drivers who would like a Land Rover on the driveway.

Even the entry-level, Pure model is available with a heated steering wheel, as a £200 option, so use the term as a key word search when next browsing for a used model.

BMW 4 Series convertible

The best used car with a heated steering wheel for wind in your hair driving

BMW 4 Series' with heated steering wheels from £17,750
Finance from £241 per month

Picture the scene: a brilliant blue sky on a crisp winter’s day, a BMW convertible on the driveway and a cheeky Sunday morning drive to, ahem, pick up the papers, milk and bread. Set the heater to toasty, power up the heated seats, turn on the ‘air collar’ – a supply of warm air to your neck – and, finally, switch on the steering wheel warmer.

Now you’re ready to go enjoy yourself. Part of the 4 Series convertible’s Comfort Package, it would have been a £710 option on new models and included a wind deflector and the air collar, as well as the heated steering wheel.

Jaguar XFs with heated steering wheels from £19,900

Not everyone looking to buy a luxury sports saloon wants to drive one made by Germany’s dominant car companies, and as an alternative the Jaguar XF is hard to beat.

The latest, second generation model of the British-built cruiser offers a heated steering wheel, as part of the £760 Cold Climate Pack. That also includes an electrically heated windscreen – which greatly speeds up de-icing – and heated front and rear seats.
