The best used cars with a heated steering wheel

Prone to getting cold hands during the winter? The idea of a heated steering wheel may sound like a dream, but it's an attainable one

A few years ago, you'd have been looking at the prospect of spending tens of thousands of pounds if you wanted to purchase a car with a heated steering wheel. That kind of domain was reserved for owners of the Mercedes S-Class or Bentley Continental.

Now though, you can pick up used car with a heated steering wheel for much less than that. In fact, we have a Vauxhall Corsa on this list priced at £5,663 with the tools to keep your hands warm, and there are many more like it that will ensure that the next time you pull up next to an expensive luxury car at the traffic lights, you can feel smug in the knowledge that you are just as cosy sat in your cheap little hatchback as they are in their wood veneer-smothered pose-mobile.

The latest technological innovations we now take for granted, such as sat-nav, automatic climate control, heated seats, voice control, adjustable driving modes or life-saving safety equipment were once the preserve of the most expensive cars money could buy, but they all end up with the masses eventually.

Like heated seats, a heated steering wheel is one of those things that you’ll not want to do without after experiencing it for the first time in a bone-chilling winter. At the touch of a button, heating elements beneath the surface of the wheel’s leather trim warm a defined area.

Heated steering wheel option packs

Some car makers offer the heated steering wheel as standard, others want buyers to pay and add it as an optional extra.

Sometimes you can find yourself paying between £100-£200 for the perk, but in some cases warming the wheel will be part of a package of items, such as a Winter Pack, that will include heating for the seats, steering wheel, windscreen washer and wing mirrors. The latest Volvo XC40 SUV is available with such a pack for £500. These packs can often cost four figures and include a whole array of extras.

All we need now is a heated gearstick. But that’s only a matter of time. Here are five models that are warm to the touch – and illustrate how such creature comforts have become widely available across a range of models.

1. Vauxhall Corsa

The best used car with a heated steering wheel for runaround prices

Used deals from £5,663
Monthly finance from £111*

Affordable costs make the Corsa one of Britain’s best-selling cars, but that’s not to say it skimps on luxuries such as a heated steering wheel. From £5,663, there are used models available that were fitted from new with the heated steering wheel, which came as standard on the Energy trim level, and above.

If you want something a little larger from the same manufacturer, try the Vauxhall Mokka, the SUV that is about the same price and size as a Nissan Juke.

2. Nissan Leaf

The best used car with a heated steering wheel for eco-friendliness

Used deals Limited stock

We’re curious to know how many Leaf owners dare to switch on their car’s heated seats and steering wheel on a chilly day and risk eating up that all-important electric range. Heating these small areas is far more efficient than using the fans, though.

The previous-generation Leaf is capable of travelling up to around 130 miles on a single charge, but switch on all its electrical features on a wet, chilly day and you can expect that to fall far below 100 miles. The heated steering wheel was added to the facelifted version of the first generation Leaf that went on sale from 2013, and is also available on the latest model with longer range and updated styling.

3. Kia Ceed

The best used car with a heated steering wheel for warranty warriors

Used deals from £9,590
Monthly finance from £182*

Kia understands that buyers of affordable family hatchbacks would like to have posh-car features, so its Ceed – the car best known for serving time for Top Gear’s Star in a Reasonably Priced Car – can be had with features including a heated steering wheel.

A rival to the Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus, the Ceed is about as sensible – and exciting - as a pair of Clarks shoes, but for many drivers that’s just fine, especially when its gadgets and gizmos may be covered by a warranty that lasts for up to seven years.

4. Land Rover Discovery Sport

The best used car with a heated steering wheel for off-roading ability

Used deals from £27,482
Monthly finance from £390*

Land Rover’s most affordable model is the Discovery Sport, which went on sale in 2015. It’s also the company’s most popular, bringing a combination of practicality – seven seats and four-wheel drive are available with most models - and affordable running costs to drivers who would like a Land Rover on the driveway.

Even the entry-level Pure model is available with a heated steering wheel, as a £200 option, so use the term as a key word search when next browsing for a used model.

Picture the scene: a brilliant blue sky on a crisp winter’s day, a BMW convertible on the driveway and a cheeky Sunday morning drive to, ahem, pick up the papers, milk and bread. Set the heater to toasty, power up the heated seats, turn on the ‘air collar’ – a supply of warm air to your neck – and, finally, switch on the steering wheel warmer.

Now you’re ready to go enjoy yourself. Part of the 4 Series Convertible’s Comfort Package, it would have been a £710 option on new models and included a wind deflector and the air collar, as well as the heated steering wheel.
