Which used Range Rover Velar should you buy?
There’s a fair amount of choice when it comes to Range Rover Velar engines and trim levels, but there’s only one body style – a five-door SUV format.
The same can be said of most rivals these days, but the Range Rover Velar isn’t the most practical car of its type, as it has relatively tight rear seats. The boot space, meanwhile, is limited by the shapely tapered rear of the body, too. Still, if you’re mainly using it as family transport, with kids in the back, there shouldn’t be a shortage of legroom.
The pay-off is that the Range Rover Velar is one of the most desirable and elegant SUVs around – and it’s still a pretty practical machine compared with many other mid-sized SUVs and estate cars.
The engine options have changed a little since the Range Rover Velar made its debut in 2017, not least because you can’t now order the car in the highest-spec SVAutobiography trim, with its supercharged 5.0-litre petrol engine. The fact this trim is incredibly rare second-hand hints at why it was dropped – it wasn’t hugely popular.
Until 2020, you could pick from a range of diesel engines starting with the 182PS D180 and 243PS D240 2.0-litre units, with 3.0-litre engines powering the 279PS D275 and 304PS D300 models.
The P250 and P300 2.0-litre petrol hybrids with 253PS and 355PS are still current, and nearly new buyers might also want to consider the D200 and D300 MHEV mild hybrids, or the P400e PHEV plug-in hybrid.
All Range Rover Velars offer permanent four-wheel drive and a slick eight-speed automatic gearbox, while higher-spec models have excellent air-suspension for a truly luxurious ride.

What used Range Rover Velar trim levels are available?
Land Rover offers two different approaches in terms of style, with sportier looking R-Dynamic versions available for the basic trim levels.
The R-Dynamic cars are fundamentally similar, but they have a racier feel thanks to their more aggressive bumper designs and some minor trim differences, including suede inserts for the upholstery and a satin metal finish for the pedals and gearshift paddles.

Is a used Range Rover Velar a good buy?
The Range Rover Velar was launched in 2017 to widespread media acclaim and it’s proven to be just as popular with drivers all over the UK. This popularity means you can expect to find plenty of models appearing on the used car market, and there are several reasons why you might consider buying one.
It has a high-quality feel, upmarket looks and great driving characteristics which combine to make it one of the more desirable SUVs you can buy.
The Range Rover Velar arrived to fill a gap in the Range Rover line-up between the larger and more expensive Range Rover Sport and the smaller and cheaper Range Rover Evoque. It’s big enough that it still manages to convey the same sense of grandeur that you get with the larger Range Rover models, while it also offers the typical Range Rover luxury at a relatively attainable price.
The Range Rover Velar is pitched against other luxury SUVs such as the Audi Q5 and the BMW X4, although many drivers may also find themselves pondering used Range Rover Evoque or Range Rover Sport options. Then there’s the closely-related Jaguar F-Pace, from Land Rover’s sister company, which shares much of the engineering.
While it’s easy to be tempted by the undeniable style of the Range Rover Velar, it’s important to remain aware of the likely running costs. The Range Rover Velar is very much a luxury model, which means it’s going to be relatively expensive to maintain and insure compared with cars that are much cheaper to purchase new.
