The Mazda CX-30 is a stylish crossover SUV that sits somewhere in between Mazda’s full-SUV CX-5 and the traditional hatchback Mazda 3. It’s aimed at buyers who want something with the raised-up styling of a crossover but don’t need a large, heavy SUV.

It’s available with two engines, both 2.0-litre petrols, and two gearboxes - automatic and manual - and two layouts, two- and four-wheel-drive. All versions have a lot in common with the Mazda 3 hatchback, because many parts are shared between these two models.

The entry-level petrol is the 122hp Skyactiv-G engine, while the more expensive 186hp Skyactiv-X engine is a 2.0-litre petrol that borrows technology usually used in diesel engines to make it much more efficient at low engine speeds. It makes a significant difference in terms of emissions, but in the real world the difference in fuel economy isn’t as large as you might think.

The CX-30 is an excellent car, though, as it’s really good to drive, comfortable, has a superb interior, comes well-equipped and is relatively affordable considering how high-quality it feels.

Read on to find out more about the Mazda CX-30’s dimensions, boot space and weight.

Mazda CX-30 dimensions

The Mazda CX-30 is 4,395mm long, which means it’s a similar size to the Nissan Qashqai and Skoda Karoq. It’s 1,795mm wide with the mirrors folded, which means it’s a little narrower than the Nissan, which is 1,835mm across.

It’s also lower than its rivals, at 1,540mm. It still has SUV-like looks but at this height it’s lower to the ground and sharper to drive, plus it’s easier to get in and out. The Nissan is just over 1.6m tall, so it’s not a huge difference, but it is noticeable.

Rear space isn’t the best in the CX-30, as headroom is restricted by the sloping roof. However, while access is a bit of a pain, once you’re actually inside there’s enough space for adults to sit fairly comfortably. It’s usable for families, it’s just that the Skoda Karoq, for example, is much roomier.

Mazda CX-30 boot space

There’s practically the same amount of boot space in the Mazda CX-30 no matter which version you go for, which is 430 litres with the rear seats up and 1,406 litres with the rear seats folded down. However, on versions with a Bose stereo fitted, the subwoofer in the back reduces available space slightly.

In that case, you get 422 litres and 1,398 litres respectively. The Mazda is smaller inside the boot than the Nissan Qashqai, which has up to 504 litres with the seats up and 1,447 litres with them down. A Skoda Karoq is much roomier as well.

However, the CX-30 is still more spacious than a Volkswagen Golf hatchback, which has 380 litres of boot space, so it does at least benefit from its SUV body style when it comes to overall luggage space.

Mazda CX-30 towing capacity

The Mazda CX-30 isn’t an ideal choice for towing, as it can only pull up to 1,300kg no matter which engine you choose. The four-wheel-drive models also can’t tow any more than this.

There are plenty of other family SUVs that have far greater towing capacities; for example, the Nissan Qashqai can pull up to 1,800kg in some forms.

Mazda CX-30 weight

Mazda’s cars are usually lighter than the competition, because the company tends to focus on improving efficiency and handling through weight reduction in all of its cars. The CX-30 is only about average for its class, though, as things like four-wheel-drive and automatic gearboxes inevitably add weight.

Mazda’s kerb weight figures include a 75kg driver, but even with that taken into account, the car weighs from 1,452kg. That’s not bad for an SUV but there are plenty of models that weigh less. The high-spec four-wheel-drive automatic version, meanwhile, weighs 1,629kg, which is on the heavy side even for a mid-sized SUV like this.
